They're easy and cheap!

Creating an accent wall is an easy way to liven up a space. After all, nothing can make a space drab than having plain walls. While wallpaper, bricks, and wood panels make for great accents, they can be pricey and difficult to install, especially if you have no one to help you but yourself. Stumped on ideas? Here are some that you can try:

1. Transform old fabric into wall art.

You don’t have to buy framed wall décor from department stores—you can make them yourself! Get an unused fabric—preferably with striking patterns—cut them, and frame them. Or, you can have the entire fabric framed and hang it on your wall. You may paint your wall with a cheery hue to add more life, but if you want to keep your wall neutral, a white wall will do.

2. Paint your wall a bold color.

Reds, oranges, magenta—feel free to use any vibrant color for your accent wall. The tomato red wall in this hallway definitely makes a statement. When you have a wall as bold as this, keep the other décor around it simple to keep your accent wall from being overbearing. A simple painting is enough, as long as the colors in it mingle well with the color of your wall.

3. Use table napkins.

If you don’t have a piece of fabric, why not use old table napkins? Get an 18”x18” cloth table napkin that might just be hiding in your drawer, and cut them according to the size of your wood frames (which you can buy at art supplies stores). Stretch the fabric and staple it onto the frame. Hang several framed table napkins on your wall.

RL Tip: You can even paint your wall with a bold neutral color—like this chocolate brown wall—to highlight your DIY wall art even more.
