What Do Ascott and St. Luke's Have in Common? A Bedsheet Supplier

To be clear, the aforementioned establishments don't use the exact same bedsheets. They have the same bedsheet supplier. Their different services require different materials and even thread counts. But despite their distinct niches—the first provides five-star luxury amenities, the other is one of the top-tier medical facilities in the country—they've both invested in quality bedding for their clients through the same wholesaler, Premium Linen.

And now, the people behind Premium Linen are bringing their hotel-quality sheets to Filipino households through their new direct-to-consumer brand, Doyle & Furnham. Their products are available on Lazada, Shopee, their website, and at their newly opened store at Gate 3 Plaza in Taguig.

In an exclusive interview with SPOT.ph, Doyle & Furnham’s founder JP Fernandez and his wife and co-founder Janina Fernandez talk about creating the right sheets for their clients, selling those sheets online as sets for everyday customers, and making luxury sleep affordable.

How Doyle & Furnham produces hotel-quality sheets

The hotel industry was one of the hardest-hit during the pandemic, which meant their suppliers—and their workers—were also affected. This was what pushed JP to extend Premium Linen, established as a B2B company in 2017, to a B2C brand as Doyle & Furnham in 2020.

"Ever since, 'yung company kasi namin, we're suppliers to hotels. We're wholesaling A to Z items, everything you see inside the hotel room—bedsheets, towels, pillows, everything talaga. So, when the pandemic came, we had to find ways to earn profit."

JP explains that when they sell to hotels, they actually follow government guidelines. "'Yung specifications dapat dedicated sa standards ng Department of Tourism. So, we really know what we're doing."

He reveals, "For example, si Balesin, kailangan 100% cotton. Dapat more than 300 thread count 'yung sa fabric specifications nila." While there are many layers to bedsheet quality (pun intended), a 300 thread count is generally "optimal" and a higher thread count could mean it’s a "denser sheet made of fine, good-quality yarns," according to The New York Times' Wirecutter.

JP says their bedsheets also go through rigorous testing at a multinational quality-assurance company. Another fun fact: a luxurious presidential suite could have different sheets from the budget-friendly deluxe room. As the room’s price per night goes up, so does its bedsheet's thread count.

"Sa Victoria Court, they have to use polyester para [it's] more durable. Kasi polyester is artificial cotton." Basically, polyester-made bedsheets are meant to survive more rounds…in the wash.

They also follow rules for towels, which have specific sizes (it’s smaller in Asian countries), grammage (the higher the grams per meter or GSM, the more absorbent it is), and pile (how long those individual tiny loops are that make up a towel).

Currently, they offer face towels (P160 on Shopee), hand towels (P315 on Shopee), bath towels (P900 on Shopee), and striped pool towels (P1,295 on Shopee). They even have bath mats (P950 on Lazada) and bath robes (P2,495 on Lazada).

"Technical talaga siya," JP says. "Sure kami bebenta talaga sa consumers kasi ito 'yung quality ng hotels. Ito 'yung [for] everyday washing. Durable talaga siya."

Since they already know how to create high-quality items as Premium Linen, it was just a matter of packaging them for consumers as Doyle & Furnham. They're selling the exact same sheets they supply to their whoelsale clients to individual Filipinos who want a hotel-like experience at home.

Doyle & Furnham’s best-selling sets

We all know what the experience of shopping for beddings is like: walking through department store aisles with shelves overwhelmingly stocked with bright prints and busy patterns that you have to mix and match. Doyle & Furnham wants to change that.

"Ginawa naming naka-set na. So, core set, starter set—which are 'yung mga bestsellers namin—mas madali siya makuha ng households. Kasi pag B2B, isa-isa. Ginawa namin sa mga households, naka-set na lahat. Mamimili na lang sila. Mabilis siya i-add to cart," Janina explains.

Doyle & Furnham offers four sets that all have sheets made of hypoallergenic material, 100% high-grade Pakistani cotton, with a 300 thread count. They're also OEKO-TEX-certified to be free of harsh chemicals.

If you're just starting to invest in your sleep and don't need anything too fancy, the Starter Set (P3,105 on Shopee) includes one fitted sheet and two pillowcases. This is also a great option if you want to try their products first before going all out.

For those who sleep hot and only need a thin blanket, you could opt for the Core Set (P5.395 on Shopee), which includes a flat sheet in addition to the fitted sheet and two pillowcases.

On the other hand, those who easily get cold should go for the Full Bundle (P9,290 on Shopee). It has a weighted fleece blanket (like the brown ones from fancy hotels) included with one fitted sheet, one flat sheet, and four pillowcases.

The Ultra Bundle (P15,360 on Lazada) is a worthy investment if you want it all in just one go. It has the basics: a fitted sheet, flat sheet, and four pillowcases. And everything else you need for a cozy slumber: two microfiber pillows, a duvet infill, and a duvet cover.

All fitted sheets in the sets are available in four sizes: single, double, queen, and king. The pillowcases are available in the standard or king size. As for the sheets’ pattern, you can choose between one-centimeter or three-centimeter stripes. At the moment, the sheets are only available in a minimalist-friendly white hue.

Doyle & Furnham's products are also available individually. The fitted sheets start at P1,820 on Shopee while the flat sheets start at P2,015. Those who prefer sleeping under the light weight of a comforter would enjoy the Comforter Set (from P7,325 on Lazada) that comes with a duvet infill and cover.

You can also choose between two kinds of pillows: the Microfiber Pillow (P1,275 on Lazada) and Goose Down Pillow (from P4,050 on Shopee). Then you can cover them with cotton pillowcases (P980 for a set of 2 on Shopee) or a Waterproof Quilted Pillow Protector (from P890 on Lazada).

Doyle & Furnham's not-so-top secret

While the sets are Doyle & Furnham’s bestsellers because of their convenience, JP’s favorite product from their lineup are actually their mattress toppers. "For me kasi, kahit pangit 'yung mattress sa bahay, pag bumili sila ng mattress toppers, it would really make a difference. Iba talaga 'yung mattress toppers namin."

The Comforcel Oxygel™ Flex Mattress Topper is perfect for gym rats, massage-place regulars, and basically, anyone who needs soft-but-firm support for their body. It feels similar to memory foam but it has multiple ventilation channels so it doesn’t get as hot when you’re asleep.

It’s made to provide pressure relief, which then reduces pressure peaks and improves blood circulation. It’s also supposed to reduce tossing and turning (goodbye restlessness, hello REM) and comes with a removable and washable cover.

As a young couple starting a family of their own, Janina and JP wanted to make shopping for bedroom essentials less of a chore for their fellow millennials. "Gen Zs and millennials kasi gusto nila fast and quick, 'di ba? Lalo na if mag-move ka ng condo or ng house. Ayaw mo na ang dami mong iisipin. So, that’s what we created for our brand—affordable, fast, and ease of choice," says Janina.

The in-store experience

Since Doyle & Furnham launched, they've made it a point to make adding to cart as easy as hitting the hay. Their five-star ratings on Lazada and Shopee are a testament to their quality products, delivery time, and packaging (which is a Very Important Factor for any Pinoy who reviews online orders).

But JP and Janina know that their products should be seen and experienced in person. "Kasi 'yung bedsheets, you have to feel it bago mo mabili. Pag visual lang, ang hirap niya ibenta,” JP says.

This writer personally tried out the Doyle & Furnham Mattress Topper on display at their store. And while undoubtedly soft as a cloud, we found that it didn’t fit my needs as someone almost always sore from some sort of workout. "Gusto namin 'yung pagkapasok, may dalang tote bag tapos lalagay-lagay na lang. We're still practicing," JP says. Major mall chains have already reached out to them to open up shop, so it’s something they’ll be looking into down the line.

As for now, they’re a lean but efficient team of 12—including the workers at the factory and staff at the store led by manager Lorenzo Milan.

Doyle & Furnham and the importance of sleep

While Doyle & Furnham's main target market consists of newlywed millennials, they've also reached ever-caring moms who shop for their families. "Ma-f-feel mo talaga 'yung love ng moms. Sasabihin nila, 'Hindi na nakakatulog 'yung anak ko.'" Tapos splurge din talaga sila pag may bagong bahay sila," says JP.

Those who come with the moms-who-take-forever-to-shop also have a place to wait in the backroom of Doyle & Furnham’s store. A door behind the counter leads to Voodoo, a speakeasy also owned by the couple. But that's another story.

Janina, who used to work in corporate merchandising, now gets to interact with customers firsthand. She sees the simple but meaningful difference they make.

"Mag-t-text lang sila na, 'Grabe, Janina, hindi ako nagising, nag-oversleep ako.'" She takes it to heart, saying, "Ganoon pala 'yung na-c-contribute ng product ko."

JP adds, "Lagi nilang sinasabi na, 'Uy, nadagdagan ng two hours 'yung tulog ko.' Sabi ko, 'Ma'am, na-late po ba kayo?'"

"'Eto nga, papasok pa lang e'," they reply.

You'd think it would be more expensive to have the same sheets as a five-star hotel. And with how busy life gets, a good night's sleep is a luxury that many of us can barely afford. But not only does Doyle & Furnham make it accessible, they also make it a bargain. One night in a suite costs more than their bedding set that would last you for years.
