As homeowners, we're always on the lookout for stores that can help us furnish and complete our spaces. If you've been looking for proudly Pinoy and quirky pieces to add to your home sweet home, we're sure that you're familiar with Space Encounters. This one-of-a-kind store features unique pieces with interesting modern twists.

If you've got extra time this coming weekend, you may want to drop by the store for pieces that you can use to give your home a new look just in time for New Year. Here are three reasons why a visit to Space Encounters is a must:

You get to take home pieces inspired by Pinoy culture

The mid-century modern home store's new collection takes inspiration from everyday Pinoy items. According to owners Wilmer Lopez and Thor Balanon, their “Boring Things” collection, was sprung from a desire to show the extent of what the brand can do. Thor goes into greater detail behind the concept of Boring Things, explaining that the name came out of a brainstorming session that had them rethinking the things around us that we don’t normally notice. “We were trying to understand, as a group, what ‘boring things’ are, so we isolated the everyday things—that if you take them out of context, they become something else entirely.”

It gives a new perspective on furniture

For their new collection, one of their exercises was to go to Quiapo to look at the everyday items Filipinos use. “We asked ourselves, ‘What can we see there that we can use as peg?’ May nakita kaming mga hanger, kaldero, tumbang preso, clothing pins—then we made them into something else, like wallpaper patterns. These are things na ini-ignore mo at home, but nagkaroon ulit sila ng bagong perspective.”

The bangko-bangkito (or bench) is another example of how Space Encounters has taken a lowly piece of furniture into a coveted, mid-century-inspired item. Wilmer recalls, “We were sitting on a bangko, and we said, ‘O, parang maganda ‘to a, pero hindi pinapansin.’ Why don’t we refine it further? If you notice, ang mga bangko, very ma-kanto. So we gave it more curved edges, and nand’un yung Scandinavian element of making it more fluid, and hindi siya massive tingnan.”

The store is very accessible

Given the crazy holiday traffic, it’s very hard to get to one place from another! If you live or work around the Pasig or Mandaluyong area, you can easily visit Space Encounters. It's located at Unit B Mezzanine, Padilla Condominium Bldg., F. Ortigas Jr. Road, Ortigas Center, Pasig City. The store is open from 11am to 8pm (Monday to Friday). They are open until 5pm only on Saturdays.
