RL Makeovers: A Colorful 30sqm Condo for Four Roommates

Homeowner Sunshine Perez was used to living in a well-organized place, but when she moved into a condo with her cousins, Rochelle and Rizza, and their friend, Gan, she had to deal with the mess. “Sanay ako na maayos ang bahay. Frustrating kapag medyo magulo yung tinitirhan,” Sunshine shares.

It was this frustration that prompted Sunshine, a teacher temporarily based in Seoul, to write to Real Living for a makeover. “Gusto kong ma-organize na siya, kasi once na pumasok ka, puro cabinet,” Sunshine says. “Parang hindi ka naglu-look forward umuwi. You’d want to spend more time outside than in your own place,” Gan adds.

Interior designer Wilmer Lopez of W. Lopez Designs says the main problem of the unit was storage. “Yung space kasi, studio siya, so ang ideal na occupant dalawa. But there are four, so consideration yung lifestyle nila,” he explains.

Wilmer and his in-house designers  Elvin Santos and Bril Flores-Sanchez set out to re-create the depressing unit into a functional, stylish space fit for the dwellers’ dainty personalities. The walls of the foyer, kitchen and dining area were painted aqua, while pink graces the living and sleeping areas.  All existing furniture were replaced with sleek new ones from Crossings Department Store, complemented by bright décor courtesy of W. Lopez Designs and Space Encounters.

Sanay na silang tatlo (Rochelle, Gan, and Rizza) in this room. Pero si Sunshine, once in a while daw umuuwi, so nagiging four sila dito,” says Wilmer. To accommodate all four of them,  Wilmer provided a sofabed from Crossings Department Store “Underneath, meron kaming pullout na folding mattresses,” he shares.

He also added a gold ottoman, also from Crossings Department Store, whose top can be lifted off to serve as storage.

“We tried to make it easy maintenance kasi lahat sila nag-wo-work,” says Wilmer. Hence the plastic storage boxes and drawers. And also the washable curtains in a pretty pattern  that hide—and accentuate—the built-in shelves and cabinets.

“Before, may dalawang closet dito, plus a big, long bench and a TV,” says Wilmer of the living/sleeping area. Wilmer retained the bigger closet, had it re-finished in a lighter shade, and added open-shelves  and a  custom-made cabinet to replace the other one.  The built-in sliding door and kitchen cabinets in cherry varnish were repainted in a much lighter shade as well.

To help the girls in organizing, Wilmer gave each  one with plastic storage boxes labeled with their names. Other storage boxes were also labeled with what is to be stored in them, like shoes. In the kitchen, a washable weekly planner was posted on the wall, where the girls can list down division of chores.

Instead of going for white or beige commonly seen in small spaces, Wilmer opted to go  for pink, aqua, and green to reflect the girls’ fun, bubbly, and kikay personalities.

Bril also noticed that the girls are fond of chilling out, as evident in the abundance of party drinks in their fridge. Thus, the designers opted for a bar setup in the dining area.

In the bathroom, Bril  says that only a small, wooden storage on the floor used to keep the girls’ personal things. They remedied this by installing a ledge by the mirror “kasi wala silang patungan kapag nagme-makeup,” says Wilmer. Overhead ledges in the bedroom and dining area were also installed to hold more plastic boxes.
