Homeowners Chris and Lorie often shared their bed with daughters Abby and Xyra because the girls did not want to sleep alone. Abby and Xyra thought that their 5sqm bedroom was too dark and small for the both of them. However, the master bedroom was beginning to be too crowded for the whole family. Since Chris and Lorie needed their personal space and private time together, they decided that the girls’ bedroom had to be renovated.

Real Living asked interior designer Kristine Neri-Magturo of Abode & Co. to change the space into a dual-purpose bedroom. Kristine and junior designers Kimi Manuel and Ycah Villena, whipped up a pretty, functional design that pleased both kids and parents.

Ang galing na lahat ng corner, useful. Lahat ng nilagay nila, may purpose,” says Lorie. Abby can’t help gushing about the made-over space, which now looks as beautiful as the ones they see on magazines. As for Xyra, she gleefully jumped on the furnished bed upon seeing it—in the middle of the shoot! “Si Xyra gusto na nga matulog diyan kagabi pa kahit wala pang bedsheet,” relates Lorie.

Homeowner Lorie explains that they used to have a store-bought double deck bed but it was too big for the 5sqm bedroom. Kristine later replaced the girl’s shared bed with a customized bunk bed. A custom-made piece is best for tiny areas to get the right size for the space.

More cabinets were added for storing toys and clothes above the top bed.

The team initially thought of a color scheme that’s predominantly yellow with touches of gray and pink. The yellow materialized on the walls, whose base is painted butter yellow.  Pink and blue polka dots were also painted on the walls as accent. Green is likewise added in the bunk bed and closet. The light colors visually widened the bedroom.

Above the pull-down writing desk are shadowboxes to display accessories. There is also a DIY picture holder made of a foam board covered in the same fabric as the bedsheets.

Kristine reveals that they chose queen-size bedsheets for the standard single beds and used the excess fabric to decorate the space.

Since the bedroom was too small, Kristine could not create a typical study area complete with a work desk. She decided to incorporate study in between the bed and storage with a drawer-type writing surface and the pull-down desk.

The bedroom looks brighter because of the additional lighting in the study spots.

The design team was able to sneak in inconspicuous storage spaces in every nook and cranny of the tiny room. Before, there were cabinets here and there, set out in plain sight, which resulted in visual clutter.
