A Warm and Inviting Feel for a Family Home

Dubbed as The Biggest Makeover Ever—let's revisit Real Living's ultimate makeover winner for 2008

Most interior designers find Real Makeovers challenging with its budget constraints and the amount of work that had to be done in a short period of time. But for Hannah Acab-Faustino of IDeal Interior Design Services, working on these projects brings nothing but excitement. She sees potential in every home and finds these makeovers an opportunity to meet homeowners who would appreciate her functional designs.

In 2008, Hannah took on the Ultimate Makeover challenge for the Barcos family. The outcome was so spectacular that even the Barcos's neighbors had made it a habit to take a breather in their house! Check out the transformation with these photos:

Makeovers do not necessarily mean getting rid of everything that already exists. In the Barcos home, Hannah decided to retain the balustrade and worked around this architectural feature by adding new pieces that would go well with it, like textured glass, an area rug, lamps, and tabletop accessories.

The color scheme for this home came about when Hannah selected the patterned wallpapers as wall accents. Touches of moss green were injected in the other design elements for a more neutral feel.

One way to instantly change the ambiance of any space is to change the flooring. For this dwelling, wood laminates were installed to update the old cement tiles which were already dirty and uneven.

When the designer assessed the house, she discovered the dirty bathroom. A new sink, water closet, shower fixtures, and tiles—all in white—instantly did wonders to change the unsightly look of the bath.

You can also work with white fixtures, but if these pieces make the space a bit too plain for you, you can inject color by choosing cute and quirky accessories.

Sometimes, minor tweaks aren’t enough to transform an area. The Barcos's kitchen certainly has gone a long way with its brand new granite countertops, cabinet doors, quirky cabinet pulls, and better lighting.
