A Streamlined Transformation for the Living and Dining Areas

Discover why the homeowners and their neighbors went “ooh” and “aah” over this makeover

Fate had a hand in Amy Ludovice’s living and dining makeover. The accountant would often spend her lunch break in bookstores and pore over magazines, when one day, she spotted Real Living, saw their makeover promo, and bought a copy. It was also that time when Amy received a camera from her sibling, which allowed her to take photos of her home. This opportune timing allowed her to submit a makeover entry—after all, she had nothing to lose.

Months later, she found out that she won the makeover of her dreams—a pleasant surprise for the mother of four who had always yearned to redesign her space but lacked the funds to do so. With the help of interior designer Vivian Gacad, Amy’s living and dining spaces were transformed into areas that are visually at par with model units she’d seen.

Here are three tips that we can learn from this makeover:

Replace bulky seating options in the living room with more streamlined pieces. In Amy’s living room, a cushioned wooden sofa and a woven chair replaced the worn-out sofa and were paired off with two small round tables instead of one center table.

Vivian observed that the rough walls had cracks and holes, so she had them smoothened out and repainted. You can also mask similar imperfections easily by covering them using picture frames or mirrors.

The Ludovices used the area underneath the stairs as storage, but it was unsightly because there was no sense of order. To make the space more visually appealing, Vivian had cabinets installed and painted it in a refreshing color.
