A Fresh Take for a Girl’s Bedroom
A young achiever receives the best reward—a cheery and bright makeover for her room
Roanne Castillo is mom to four-year-old achiever Niella. Together with husband Nathaniel, the couple wanted their daughter’s room revamped because it was the only room at home that's left untouched, and they were also already training her to sleep in a room by herself. They also see the makeover as a fitting reward for Niella’s achievements in school.
Interior designer Kathryn T. Villanueva stepped in to give the bedroom a refreshing new look. Upon inspection, she noted the wasted spaces, furnishings that needed replacement, and the gloomy ambiance of the young girl’s room. To improve the space, she worked with new pieces and a bright color palette. If you are also thinking about giving your kid's room an upgrade, here are some ideas that we learned from this makeover:
To utilize the wasted space, the existing cabinets were moved behind the door. The designer then placed a desk in place of the old cabinets, utilizing the natural light that comes from the window next to it in the process.
Kathryn opted for light-colored furniture and shelves that would still suit most styles, in the event that Niella would apply changes to her room when she grows up.
The old bed was replaced with a daybed to exude a playroom vibe. To make the space even more playful, Kathryn chose a lively color scheme and added accent colors like orange and pale blue.
A daybed is a better choice since it doesn't take up too much space and the room can be easily transformed into a guest bedroom when needed.
Light-colored curtains were chosen for the space. This allows Niella to enjoy some natural light while playing or even studying. Since the bubbly young lady has a lot of things, an extra shelf was added to control clutter in the room.
RL Tip: Liven up a plain sofa by adding printed and colorful pillows. Choose complementary colors for a cohesive look.
