A Cottage-Inspired Look for A Decades-Old Ancestral Home

Interior designer Vera Villarosa-Orila chose a cool palette and refurbished the family’s existing pieces

To celebrate parties, reunions, and even casual get-togethers, there’s always one home that serves as the official venue. More often than not, it’s the family home where many of us grew up in. However, it’s inevitable for this space to show signs of wear and tear; and it’s safe to say that a couple of repair and improvement projects have been done to maintain it. While one can splurge on renovation, preserving the home’s nostalgic feel and details is also important.

Take a cue from this living area makeover by interior designer Vera Villarosa-Orila. The ancestral home hasn’t been updated in a decade, and to breathe new life into the space, Vera knew that a touch of color is needed. She also worked on the floor, the walls, and the ceiling—resulting in a living area that’s cozy and perfect for family weekends.

Prior to the makeover, the living area had cream walls, marble floor tiles, and a wenge sliding door. To update the look, Vera started by refurbishing the existing pieces. Instead of buying a new set, the designer painted the chairs white and went for a distressed finish. Given the finished product, Vera then chose colors that would complement the chairs.

Vera chose mint green for the walls to liven up the place and give it a boost. The rest of the decor followed suit, with framed faux grass decorating the walls, potted greens, and a graphic area rug to anchor the area. To complete the polished look, the entire flooring was changed using vinyl laminates from Handyman.

Look up and see an elegant detail on the ceiling. It was difficult to see the molding before the makeover given the white-gray palette. To make it stand out, Vera had it painted in duck egg blue.

To echo the same feel and details, the door was likewise updated with a fresh coat of white paint and molding in a shade of gray.

Vera also improved the wall across the TV by sprucing it up in a faux brick design. The charming artwork with dainty colors serve as a fitting focal point. Meanwhile, a sectional sofa bed from Handyman makes for a cozy must-have since the owners love watching TV. 

To give them space for snacks and refreshments, a classic-style coffee table, painted in distressed white, was also added. The printed pillow covers in different colors also add life to the living area.
