Sharing a bedroom with a friend or roommate can be challenging especially if you have a small space to work with—but what if there are four occupants who share one tiny sleeping space? While it can be fun and cozy for a family of four to share a bedroom, it can be difficult as well given their numerous belongings and the fact that two are children who need a play/study corner, too.

When design consultant Grace Moslares saw the room, she knew that having ample storage can greatly improve the space. Together with her team at Magara Interiors, Grace set to work, brought in new furniture pieces, and added pops of color to the room. The result is not only a more relaxing sanctuary, it’s functional and perfect for work and play, too. Discover how Grace and her team changed the space with the details and tips below:

Constantly edit your belongings and keep only what you need.

Just like in any other home improvement project, it was crucial for the family to let go of things they no longer use or need. Discarding unnecessary items can give you more space for more important belongings and new purchases as well.

Bring in smart storage solutions.

Once the coast was clear, the design team brought in must-haves to help control clutter. A slim shelf beside the bed can be used to display photographs, accessories, and books. They also added a customized cabinet with adjustable shelves by the door to hold knickknacks and other essentials.

Choose multipurpose furniture pieces.

Avino Fine Living provided the perfect pieces to overhaul the room. This side table with steel legs gives a sleek look to the room. Aside from keeping décor in place, it can also be used as a study desk by the kids.

Aside from the side table, Avino Fine Living also provided two printed, low chairs the kids can use, a brown ottoman that can serve as an extra seating, and the transforming sofa in the middle. This sofa can be easily turned into a queen-size bed with a pull of the base.

Work with a bright and refreshing palette.

How can you turn an ordinary bedroom into an inviting and calming space? Grace and her team worked with a palette that suits the tastes of the occupants. White dominates the room with aquamarine used as accent color and hints of blue and pink here and there.

The shutters were especially built by the design team to cover the window. To keep the look cohesive the ceiling fan was also painted aquamarine. The Boysent paints used in this makeover were sourced from Handyman.

Don’t forget to throw in a couple of interesting and charming details.

Instead of keeping the DIY gallery wall that the family had before, Grace chose to anchor the whole space using an abstract artwork by her lead painter, Jason Bongat. The colors of the artwork blends perfectly with the wall and chosen pieces.

To keep the ceiling from being dull and boring, Grace also added an accent panel completed with glow-in-the-dark spray paint. When it's time for bed, it resembles a galaxy far, far away to the delight of the kids.
