It’s generally a good thing to share a room with your kids, but for the Tobias family, things weren’t exactly comfortable for their brood of three. Homeowner Kristine relates their sleeping difficulties in a space that’s barely 9sqm. “Nakalabas na ‘yong paa namin. Sanay na ‘yong paa ko na naka-hang!” She shares the small bed with Toby, her husband, and Josh, their son. Before the makeover, the room can only accommodate a full-sized bed and a compact closet.

Extending the room can help solve this problem and to make this happen, the family had help from interior designer Vera Villarosa-Orila and architect Hector Ligeralde. The dry wall that separates it from the adjacent room was taken down. Now with a bigger space, the room can finally fit a queen-size foam bed, situated against the door of the old master bedroom, which the interior designer had sealed off and turned into a wall.

The major improvements are mostly requests by the couple—from the color scheme that’s easy on the eyes, down to their customized bed frame with built-in drawers for additional storage.

Here are tips we can learn from this makeover:

Consider the person you're sharing the room with

Since the Tobias couple is sharing the space with their child, it was necessary for the boy to have a spot he can call his own in the room. The interior designer fitted a small study desk filled with kid-friendly accessories. Vera believes that there should be a compromise. “Dapat merong kid’s corner, pero hindi rin dapat gano’n ka-kiddie para pagpasok ng parents, hindi nila ma-feel na hindi nila room ‘yon.”

Use a refreshing color scheme

The bedroom is washed in tiffany blue and white, a combination which suits both the couple and their child. On some walls, the designer used paint that creates a faux woven texture when applied.

Utilize all available spaces

Proper space planning is key in this makeover. With the larger space, Vera was able to squeeze in a floor-to-ceiling closet in one corner of the room.

Play around with storage

Another storage option in the room comes in the form of this adjustable shelf, packed with many storage boxes that hold each family member’s personal items.

Add whimsical elements

The three speech bubbles on the wall represent the Tobiases. Floating bedside tables (which are actually wooden organizers/trays!) flank each side of the queen-size foam bed.

Think about form and function

A ribbon board with leaf patterns and a chalkboard frame are just some of the accessories that lend a quirky feel to the space. The former can be used to display the family’s photos, while Josh can write his own notes on the latter.
