A Bedroom Makeover for a Single Mother and Her Children for P50,000

Interior designer Lisa Salvador turns a messy and cluttered space into a clean and organized haven

Many of us think that a makeover could simply help us have a more beautiful, comfortable, and functional place. However, a makeover could actually mark a new and exciting beginning in our lives. This is especially true for Real Living makeover winner Tzarina Saniel.

Tzarina, a single mother of two, joined our makeover contest three years after going through an especially difficult time. According to her, the bedroom that she shares with her children reflected what she felt inside: sad, lonely, and confused.

To help Tzarina start anew and find new joy, interior designer Lisa Salvador chose an uplifting color scheme, replaced the old furniture pieces, and removed most of the mess and clutter.

If you would also like to improve your own personal sanctuary, here are 6 things that we can learn from this bedroom renovation:

Since the bedroom would be shared by a single mother and her daughter and son, it was challenging to come up with the color scheme. Lisa eventually drew inspiration from ice cream and from the homeowner's old towels and beddings.

"During my second visit, I noticed her towels in the bathroom and most of her beddings were in pastel colors," she says. "I kept the theme somewhat sweet in order for the kids to grow [up] in a 'light' environment," she adds.

Lisa didn't want the uneven ceiling to look so noticeable, so she painted vertical stripes on the wall meeting the lower portion of the ceiling.

Since the kids are still young, Lisa wanted to give them a bunk bed that they could use even when they are a little bit older.

"The bunk bed for kids is a very practical piece because when they grow up, the bunk bed can be turned into two separate beds."

For a spic and span space, you must get rid of things that you no longer need. You can keep your remaining things in an entertainment cabinet and charming woven baskets.

Since the family didn't have extra space to hang their clothes, Lisa provided them with a new closet. The cabinet doors were donated by J Joyas Finishing Construction, a company which specializes in interior finishes.

She also kept the children's books in a small wooden cabinet.

Lisa also decided to fix the electrical system even though it wouldn't be seen in the pictures. "Since it was a makeover, I could have stuck with the aesthetics of the room, but it is very important to remember that the electrical system of any room must be counter-checked and sometimes updated with better wires or plugs, light fixtures," she explains.
