Many homeowners are going the extra mile when it comes to improving the living area. Aside from being the first thing that guests see, it’s also the special space where family members come together to bond and relax. Lucky for us, it can be easy to update the look of the space! You can simply change the curtains and pillow covers or add a few décor pieces.

If you've been thinking of investing in a living area makeover, here are five things that we learned from Real Makeovers that may come in handy:

Define the spaces at home

If your living area flows directly into the dining area or any other part of the house, you can separate the spaces by adding wall treatments and select pieces of furniture. In this living area makeover by interior designer Jean Suzanne Sy, thin wooden strips were used on the walls.

As an option, you can also define different spaces using curtains, a huge art piece, or wall decals. Add character to the space by choosing interesting decor pieces.

Invest in the right furniture pieces

The living area needs to be a comfy space where you and your loved ones can relax and unwind. Adding too many pieces can make it look cramped so it's best to furnish it with the essentials like a sofa, a coffee table, and a few storage ottomans. If the TV is located in the area, opt for a shelf with compartments so you can use it as extra storage.

In this makeover by interior designer Michelle Dumlao-Pastoral, the living area was bare and empty so she opted for additional pieces like a wooden chest of drawers and a bench.

Invest in proper lighting

The right lighting fixture can immediately improve your space. Depending on the feel and look that you want to achieve, you can opt for drop lighting—similar to the one chosen by interior designer Hannah Acab-Faustino for this home makeover or add a couple of table lamps too.

Improve the walls

Aside from painting the walls with a refreshing new hue, you can also create an accent wall. We especially loved this wall mural done by Alfred Galvez Wall Art Design and Finishes. Interior designer Joby Belmonte chose the mural since the homeowner loves to travel.

Experiment with colors

Many of us would prefer neutrals in the living area as these colors seem to make the area airy and spacious. Don't limit yourself and feel free to experiment with colors such as green, yellow, and beige. Pick the shades according to the style that you want to achieve and make sure these hues complement the entire look of the home.

To complete the look of your living area, we also suggest that you invest in proper storage solutions to avoid clutter. Turn awkward niches into secret storage spots and opt for multipurpose furniture. If you have a vintage piece, you can have it restored and reupholstered to save on cash.
