Makati Shangri-La announced that it would be temporarily closing on February 1, 2021, in a statement released today, January 20.

"As part of the reorganization exercise, we will sadly be parting ways with a number of colleagues and we will be temporarily closing Makati Shangri-La, Manila," a company spokesperson said in a statement that was sent to

"Owing to continued low business levels and having considered all viable options over weeks of consideration and deliberation, we unfortunately must now make the extremely difficult decision to reorganise our workforce and operations in the Philippines as we continue to navigate an uncertain business environment."

"We continue to vigilantly monitor local and global developments and look forward to reopening Makati Shangri-La, Manila at a later date when business conditions have improved."

The hotel was one of 15 establishments in Metro Manila accredited by the Department of Tourism with a "Certificate of Authority to Operate as Staycation." This meant that they were operating solely as a place for staycations prior to the temporary closure.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) released a statement stating that they are "saddened by the news," on January 20. Makati Shangri-la has been a pillar of the local tourism industry, they wrote, and "has contributed to positioning the country in the region and around the globe."

The department is hopeful that the hotel will soon be able to operate again, they added. Tourism authorities have been working hard to aid the industry's recovery during the quarantine, working with private stakeholders and other government bodies such as the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), and Small Business Corporation (SB Corp).

Makati Shangri-La opened its doors in August 1993. It is a five-star hotel in the Makati central business district and is within walking distance to some of the biggest shopping malls in the Metro, making the property a popular accommodation for tourists and business travelers alike.
