These Farmers Are Now Creating Eco Bags Out of 'Dayami' Instead of Burning Them
This gives them an environmentally-friendly and sustainable source of income
Filipino farmers face many challenges; from the lack of capital and mechanization to the high cost of output and the painfully low pricing of their products in markets, millions of those tilling the fields remain in poverty.
The good news is that more and more individuals are getting into supporting farm-to-table initiatives; private groups remove the middle man and help with transportation costs of deliveries by leveraging on the power of the internet. Moreover, many organizations are now paving the way for creating sustainable income for farmers, one of which is the non-profit organization Masipag Mindanao, which is working hand-in-hand with People’s Action for a Liberative Agricultural Industry (PALAI) in creating eco bags made out of rice straws or dayami, a by-product of harvesting palay.
