Renting a space is an exciting milestone—whether you're living alone or sharing it with a roommate. Before moving in, you need to be aware of a couple of essentials to make your stay as hassle-free as possible. Here's a list of important things that you need to keep in mind:

Review your contract

Before signing the final agreement, make sure that you read it twice or thrice. Ask help from a family member or lawyer to verify the terms and see if there are any loopholes in the contract. Don't be afraid to ask questions or communicate with your landlord.

RL Tip: You have no liability except for what’s stated in your lease contract. You don’t have to deal with technicalities that are your landlord’s responsibilities such as utility problems, maintenance or neighborhood association dues.

Inquire about simple home improvement projects

Since you don’t officially own the space, there are some limitations when it comes to decorating and renovating the home. Ask your landlord about possible home improvement projects such as updating the look of kitchen cabinets, minor bathroom repairs, and the like. You should discuss the costs and labor fees as well.

Invest in the right furniture

“Invest in furniture and accessories that you love and will love forever—pieces that you can bring with you no matter where you live,” shares interior designer Peaches de Guzman-Grey. Since you won't be living in the rented space forever, you may want to avoid purchasing pieces that would be hard to move or transport.

Accessorizing is key

Since you can’t do major renovations, the best option to be able to update the look of the space is through accessorizing. With the right decor, you can create a temporary home that reflects your personality. Use wall decals to spruce up a plain wall or go for vibrant pillows and curtains. You can even change your cabinet pulls if you want, just don’t forget to put the old ones back once you move out.
