Renovating your current living space doesn’t mean that you have to change and turn everything upside down. Sometimes, the best updates are those that work with what you currently have in your home.

Take for example this 16sqm space makeover: interior designer Sharlene Lanzarrote, PIID, turned a dated dining area into a home office meeting room, going for a modern look while still retaining its old, luxe details.

“We call this project 'Monochrome Chic,'” Sharlene tells Real Living. “What we want to achieve is to make this space look opulent without breaking the bank. The greatest challenge of this project is that we needed to use all existing furniture and accessories.”

Before

The heavy dining set and the old-style drapes give you a blast to the past. A full-sized shelving system has been installed on one side of the space; however, the storage hasn’t been completely utilized.

A coat of fresh paint, marbled wall panels, fresh drapes, updated lighting, and reupholstered furniture make for a modern take on an old aesthetic. “The main goal is to upcycle the existing solid wood dining table,” says Sharlene. “It was restored and the [chairs were] reupholstered with patterned fabric.”

“Black-and-white designs are never boring; you just need to balance it out with patterns and fixtures.” Pattern-on-pattern can work most especially if you go monochromatic, as seen on the rug and the chairs. We also love the curvy ornate touches on the chandelier and the statement wall décor contrast yet complement the straight lines of the shelving system. “[It’s the] eclectic elements that made the whole design more chic and youthful.”
