A Kitchen and Dining Area Makeover for P90,000

Interior designer Andrew Galano transformed the shared spaces in this family home

Homeowner Dina Gallian wanted to renovate the first floor of their family home in Malate, Manila. She planned to turn the old maid's room into a new kitchen and the old kitchen into their dining area. However, she wasn't able to finish her mini makeover project. As a result, the new kitchen and dining areas remained in a depressing state.

To complete what Dina started, Real Living asked interior designer Andrew Galano to step in. He built new walls using Lafarge cement, improved the electrical wiring, and brought in furniture and accessories. With his help, the kitchen and dining areas are now safe, clean, bright, and beautiful.

Here are the 4 things that we can learn from these renovated spaces:

Since the old walls had no metal framework, they were not as sturdy as they should be. To remedy this, Andrew had new walls built using cement from Lafarge. He also made sure that the walls were refurbished with metal.

Andrew and his team also had to replace the electrical wiring because they needed new lines for the range hood and cooktop.

Andrew noticed that the kitchen counters had three different heights. To create a more efficient and streamlined space, he had the old counter torn down and installed a new U-shaped counter.

To make the space look neat and organized, he also designed new storage spaces. The new shelves, drawers, and cabinets are perfect for keeping the family's belongings.

The circuit breaker in the dining area used to be hidden with pink fabric. Since this looked rather gaudy and unsightly, Andrew put up pale yellow cabinets.

Andrew also removed the wall-mounted electric fan and replaced it with an Andy Warhol-style family portrait from Rise-o-Graphics.
