See How This Interior Designer Transformed Her Old Bedrooom Into a Calming, Boho-Themed Space
"It's nice to bring the outdoors in..."
Ever since she moved out, Real Living reader Bianca Maloles-Alvarez shares that her old bedroom in her parents’ Parañaque home has become a tambakan. “Our stuff just kept piling up," she shares. “We always thought, ‘Ah, sayang naman, we can still use this in the future’ [so] we would keep things until [they’re] forgotten.”
BEFORE
Like other homeowners, Bianca was hit by the home improvement bug during the pandemic. The mom, who is an interior designer, thought of giving her space a much-needed makeover, especially since she and her son would visit her parents’ home every weekend. “It’s our home away from home,” she says. “My brother has also been using [my old bedroom] as his home office ever since the 'work-from-home' situation happened."
Of course, the first thing that Bianca had to do was to declutter. “When redesigning or redecorating, I think the hardest part is letting go of things... but as William Morris once said, 'have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.'"
AFTER
After months of being stuck indoors, Bianca envisioned a modern, boho look for her space. “Quarantine has been taking a toll on us," she shares. "It's nice to bring the outdoors in by [incorporating] natural materials and elements into the space [and add] a few edgy, mid-century pieces to balance the look.”
For her accent wall, Bianca chose a calming green shade, completing the outdoorsy feel of the space.
“I did everything by myself because I was scared to let workers in during this pandemic,” she reveals. “I only shopped for a few things in a couple of stores—most of the pieces of furniture and home decor pieces were bought online.”
The stunning solihiya chair was sourced from Homeware PH. Meanwhile, the floating shelf and magazine rack were DIY-ed by the interior designer.
