Mini Makeovers: An Instant Bathroom Update Under P5,000

Are you renting a condo unit and can't re-tile or change your bath fixtures? Give your bathroom a fresh update in six easy steps.

If you’re renting a home in an apartment or condo unit, we’re sure you’ve encountered some bathroom blues, especially if you’ve been stuck with a boring, outdated loo that you can’t re-tile or renovate, just because your lease states it.

But you can give your rental’s bathroom a mini-makeover simply by changing or adding on accessories that are functional, but full of personality. Interior designer and stylist Tala Singson shows us how:

Choose a bright, cohesive color scheme.

A rented bathroom can look "put together" simply by sticking to a cohesive, sophisticated color scheme. Here, Tala chose a white, green, and beige color palette, which immediately brightened up the outdated bathroom but still goes well with the white and orange tiles.

Corral your toiletries and hide your cleaning implements.

Don't just leave your bottles of shampoo, lotion, creams, and soaps on the sink or on top of the water closet. Put them on a tray or catchall. A tray made of natural materials can also add warmth to a bathroom. Another quick update is to put away your cleaning implements and other utilitarian objects.

"Decant" your soaps.

Do you have liquid soaps, cotton buds, and lotions in different commercial containers with glaring labels lying about your countertop? Go for a streamlined look by "decanting" your liquid toiletries into matching bathroom dispenser sets.

Hang a statement shower curtain.

Since a shower curtain is the biggest accessory in the bathroom, replace your grotty curtain with a brand new one in an eye-catching print. Aside from distinguishing the shower area from your toilet and sink, a shower curtain instantly livens up a plain bathroom. Tala chose a vibrant, palm-printed curtain from H&M Home

Add a bathmat to keep the floor from looking cold.

A bathmat can also help you dry up when you step out of the shower, and keep you from dirtying up the rest of the bathroom.

Get a clothes hamper that could serve as décor.

If you love hanging dirty clothes behind your bathroom door, things can get ugly when those pile up! Get a clothes hamper on casters (so you can wheel it to the laundry room when it’s full), and choose one that’s stylish, as well.

RL Tip: If you want to make a dramatic change to your bathroom without retiling it, consider regrouting your tiles—it won’t cost as much (but do ask for permission from your landlord or building admin first).
