A Sweet Bedroom Makeover for Two Girls
See how interior designer Van Acuna-Solana transformed this shared space from boring to fabulous
Contractor woes led homeowner Rona Baello to write to Real Living for a makeover. This mom of three relates that her two girls, Jana and Jayna, prefer to sleep in their parents’ bedroom instead of their own. The girls’ bedroom has a small bed and a plain closet surrounded by bare walls—the uninviting vibe of the space can be instantly felt at first glance.
Interior designer Van Acuña Solaña was tasked to transform the plain room in just a week’s time. She recommended adding a bed and a study desk, as well as a bit of accessorizing to make the room pleasant to the eyes of its intended owners. The result is a charming space for two young girls to rest and relax in. Everyone in the family ended up liking the makeover, to the point that even Rona wants to sleep in the room, too!
Here are three things we learned from this bedroom makeover:
Make a space more inviting by incorporating your favorite hues. Jana and Jayna have a soft spot for pink and blue, so Van chose paint, fabrics, and accessories with that in mind.
A bunk bed is a good choice for small spaces, but the designer opted for a queen-sized one to avoid making any of the girls go up and down the ladder.
We also loved how Van dressed up the windows with blinds and sheer curtains. These picks give enough privacy while letting light into the space. To ensure the comfort of the girls, she also chose two ottomans in a charming hue.
Safety should be any homeowner’s top concern. In this case, the designer replaced the knobs with round ones, since the old handles had sharp edges.
Since kids have many essentials—toys, books, and other knicknacks, it's best to have enough space to accommodate these. Van chose a wall-mounted open shelf for photographs and decor as well as an open shelf with baskets for other belongings.
