When Che and Angel moved into the 21sqm studio unit in 2010, the space seemed perfect for the young couple. It’s found in a convenient location and has enough room for basic furniture pieces. Though they thought of renovating the unit, the couple had to park the idea due to lack of funds. Fast forward to 2015, they welcomed a bouncing baby boy and adjustments had to be done in the home. “We had no plans of moving to a bigger space, wala pang budget. Nung dumating si Nido, daming scratches and sulat sa wall and there were changes sa space,” relates Che. The couple had to move things around to make sure Nido can play without bumping into corners. “Nag-occupy talaga siya ng space kasi marami siyang toys. May toy car at slide pa kami dito,” she adds. Given the challenges of living in a small space like lack of proper storage and settling for a plain look, Che and Angel had to consider Nido’s growing up years, too. “Lalaki siya sa parang microapartment, four walls lang nakikita niya. But, this is what we can afford now so we make it work. Blessing talaga yung pagdating ng Real Living,” Che shares.

To help the family of three turn the tiny studio into a comfortable and functional home, Real Living worked with Matimco and interior designer Kat Villanueva-Lopez. Kat has worked on a couple of makeovers for RL before and she immediately noted the upgrades the space needs. “Storage talaga. Then I asked them how they move around the space. They wanted the furniture to be moveable so Nido can play. Gusto nila light colors like white. Okay naman working with them, malinaw ang needs. Piniga ko lang ng konti, like ano pa aside from white ang gusto nila,” the designer says.

Matimco, a trusted brand in the Philippine construction and finishing industry since 1964, has a wide range of products that can be used even in small spaces. “It was easy to choose the materials, especially for the flooring, because they have a wide range of colors and shades. They also advised me on the materials that are ideal for the kitchen,” shares Kat. The brand has been known for its passion for sustainable wood and other products that help the environment and increase the value of Filipino homes.
