You Have To Go Underground To Visit This Dreamy Antipolo Cafe
This "secret" cafe has all the right Antipolo ingredients: nature, rustic-industrial interiors, and comfort food
Originally meant to be an indoor swimming pool for the Gutierrez family, The Burrow Café at Antipolo Beehouse is now a space that houses an infinite number of possibilities. It’s a café, a shop, and a space for gatherings, collaborations, and pop-ups. But for owners Vitty and Marie Gutierrez, they simply opened The Burrow “to create a space where we could share our love for nature and good food.”
Getting to the café is an adventure unto itself, and it’s totally worth it. Here’s what to expect:
It has a “surprise” entrance
To be able to get to the café itself, you must climb down a series of steps (above) going underground to a door. When you open the door, you’ll realize that you’re standing at the edge of the mountain, and, if you listen closely, you can almost hear the water from the stream below.
The café has rustic-industrial (but lovely) interiors
The overall style of the café is a feast for the senses—mirroring the beauty that surrounds it. “Nature and raw materials inspired the Burrow's very essence, it's very foundation follows the natural contour of the land. It wouldn't look or feel as it does, if it were located in the middle of the city,” Vitty expounds.
Walls, floors, and ceiling are all left in its raw state, the dining area is a mix of colorful café chairs and wrought iron garden seats. The most beautiful aspect of the interiors is, ironically, its connection to the outdoors—the floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open to the landscape, and the lush potted plants and greenery that seem to take over the entire café.
You’ll enjoy provincial comfort food
Their food, on the other hand, similarly pleases the senses. “The food is what we've dubbed 'Filipino Provencial' or 'Probinsyang Pormal.' It is a mix of what we enjoy cooking and sharing with our family and friends, like our Slow Cooked Lechon Kawali. The drinks we currently offer are prepared slowly; the coffee is ground manually and poured over slow-drip, and our homebrewed pink iced tea is made predominantly from our garden.”
You can stay and relax, and learn a thing or two
You can enjoy these gastronomic treats on one of the outdoor garden sets, then afterwards, you can rest your head in one of the hammocks (above). Plan your weekends as early as today because The Burrow Cafe will be having more events to gather the community soon. For example, Body Food All-Natural's “Raw Mat Meet” is on August 11, 2018.
Vitty and Marie are also planning their fourth Artis Artisan Bazaar later this year. They just recently had their soft opening, but The Burrow Café is already one of the must-visit spots in Antipolo, especially if you’re looking to slow down, recharge, and be embraced by nature.
