Long weekends are like a Catch-22 situation for vacationers—you go out of town to escape the noise of the city, but when you go to your destination, you are confronted with the same thing: traffic, overbooked rooms, and long lines at restaurants.

The only solution would be to avoid the bigger hotels and head for off-the-beaten-track havens. Want another relaxing trick? Avoid going out in the crowds and hole yourself up in the hotel with a thick book and a cup of tea. Have a happy long weekend!

The rooms are your basic-yet-clean dormitory or hostel-type accommodations, but the public areas have relaxing (and soul-healing) mountain views. If you’re lucky, you can also participate in their coffee-berry-picking activities.

Baguio: Arca’s Yard

It’s a museum, a library, and a restaurant (don’t miss their delicious camote pie), but what few people know is that it’s a bed-and-breakfast as well. Owner Ninja Sabado fills this Baguio home with Ifugao antiques, artwork by Baguio-based artists such as Michael Parsons, Roland Bay-an, and Roger “Rishab” Tibon, art books, and novels to lose yourself in. Book early, as rooms are so limited, they get filled up at once.

La Union: Kahuna Hotel

Even if you don’t know how to surf, this is the La Union hotel to go to, as it has something for everyone—surfing lessons by the La Union surf school (if you want to attempt to surf), a pool for the non-surfers, cozy huts and villas, and a relaxing spa. It’s calmer than staying in the usual hostel in the area, so don’t forget to book a room with a beach view for the complete Elyu experience.

Tagaytay: Domicillo Design Hotel

If you want a staycation in Tagaytay, but are dreading the weekend crowds and noisy casino-goers, then Domicillo Design Hotel is your best bet. Situated away from the main tourist spots, the hotel has two great things: an unparalleled view of Taal Lake, and sophisticated interiors by superstar Pinoy designers such as Budji Layug and Milo Naval.

Batangas: Hotel 1925 Batangas

This newly opened boutique hotel is a hidden gem in the heart of Lipa City. It’s conveniently located near SM City Lipa, the city hall, and other major establishments in the area, but it’s far enough from the downtown crowds.

Another reason to visit is its design. It was designed like a heritage hotel (1925 is the birthdate of the owners’ patriarch Rufino Mojares) with its Spanish-style architecture, but the interiors are a lovely and interesting mix of Filipino and European antiques, 70s-style furniture, and graphic Machuka tiles.
