Venus Raj’s Airy, Tropical Bungalow

The beauty queen's dream home is simple yet relaxing

In 2011, several months after bagging the fourth runner-up title in the Miss Universe 2010 pageant, Venus Raj returned to her hometown of Bato, Camarines Sur and started building her dream home.

Construction of the bungalow took over a year and a half to complete, which the beauty queen considers an advantage. “Unti-unti lang kasi pag wala kang pera, pahihintuin mo muna yung construction. Pag meron ka naman, ‘tsaka mo siya iapapagpatuloy. No’ng naayos na siya, sabi ko, ‘Okay din naman pala,’” she shares. Aside from being budget-friendly, completing her home in stages allowed for Venus to really think about—and translate—her design plans well. While the major parts of the house have been finished and furnished, Venus humbly says there’s still more work to be done. She is, however, happy that her first home is turning out to be more than what she hoped for.

Facade

The beauty queen’s house has become somewhat of a tourist attraction in her hometown of Bato, Camarines Sur. Strangers often stop by this entrance looking for Venus, “para magpa-picture,” she says with a laugh.

Living Area

The sliding glass doors of the living area open up to the veranda, giving the homeowner great views of the rice fields across her property—something she really appreciates. “Iba yung feeling na ganyan ang makikita mo pag gising mo. Hindi mo ipagpapalit. Walang kapantay. Sobrang sarap,” she describes.

Living Area

The living area not only opens up to a veranda, it is also connected to the dining area. “Malinis, maluwag, tsaka maaliwalas lang, gano’n,” Venus says to describe this area, as well as the free-flowing layout that she wanted for her bungalow.

Living Area

These large sliding doors not only add a distinctly tropical look to the home, they also let the cool breeze in. The neutral colored curtains complement the rest of the accessories and furniture in the area—keeping the vibe light and airy.

Living Area

The walls in the living area serve as prime spots where Venus plans to display her collection of framed photographs and portraits as a beauty queen.

Kitchen

The kitchen is sparsely decorated and is kept very orderly. Instead of putting in a kitchen island, Venus opted for a simpler, more practical alternative: a long, sturdy table which can easily be cleaned and moved around as needed.

Kitchen

Venus made sure the kitchen is big enough to accommodate visiting family and friends. “Malaki talaga ang kitchen,” she says. “Kasi sa probinsiya, pa-fiesta parati—yung maghahanda ka.”

Bedroom

The Bicolana beauty says the fresh air blowing in from all sides of the house is enough to keep her room well ventilated.

Bedroom

Like the living and dining areas, the master bedroom features a sloped ceiling—a detail Venus loves. She credits it for giving this room a lot of breathing space and headroom. “Di ba ang ganda kasi maaliwalas talaga,” she says.

Bedroom

This is the beauty queen’s first room of her own. Growing up, she and her siblings, together with their mom, shared only one room in the bahay kubo they called home. The cabinets also serve as a special place where Venus can put framed photos on display.

Outdoor

Behind the family bungalow, Venus plans to have a two-story house built. Eventually, she wants to give this three-bedroom home to her siblings and their children, while she moves into the home she’s building in the backyard.
