Industrial and Mid-Century Modern styles in a 30sqm studio

Quirky art, travel finds, and custom-made furniture make this interior designer’s home unique

Gray is an unusual choice of color for most homeowners, but it can create the perfect setting for an industrial-meets-mid-century-modern style studio unit, specifically the one owned by Wilmer Lopez and Thor Balanon. Using gray walls and floors not only creates a raw, unrefined look, it also complements the signature shapes and textures often seen in mid-century modern furniture.

As the home is designed with predominantly gray-on-gray scheme, color and patterns are used sparingly. Apart from the orange piping on a Space Encounters chair in the living room, a red accent chair in the bedroom, and a few other accessories, the studio is kept bare. The simplicity has helped open up the space, making it seem more roomy and spacious than it really is.

ENTRYWAY The counter of the entryway is an extension of the kitchen counter, and holds their collection of vintage cameras, a few of their travel books, and a framed print from Space Encounters’ latest collection.
KITCHEN Since the color of the existing cabinet doors matched the design of the renovated unit, Wilmer and Thor kept them. The change they made in the kitchen was fairly simpler: adding a mirrored backsplash to the counter to create the illusion of a bigger space.
LIVING AREA Keeping things light and simple, the living area features furniture pieces in gray, black, and gold which work well with the gray walls. An interesting lamp adds accent to the space as well.
DINING AREA Instead of a dining table, Wilmer and Thor opted for a bar that serves as a dining and work area. Highlighting the space is a retro wooden pendant lamp from Bangkok, housing a rare bulb from Germany. "We found it in Berlin. Hindi na siya pino-produce na bulb, so I bought two," says Wilmer.
DINING AREA DETAIL The table highlights a vintage phone and radio, surrounded by other interesting knickknacks.
COMPACT SPACE Just beside the dining area, is the bedroom. With wood accents, the sliding doors blend perfectly with the rest of the unit.
BEDROOM Sliding doors separate the bedroom from the rest of the unit. The custom-made bed is also covered in gray sheets, with a bit of turquoise peeking out from underneath the fitted cover. Light comes from LED bulbs hidden behind pipes exposed after a beam was removed.
BEDROOM DETAIL Making the most out of their bedroom space, Wilmer was able to add a book shelf and a bed bench under the windows.
BATHROOM The use of mirrors to create the illusion of bigger space is seen in the bathroom as well. Framed photographs also adorn the walls.
WOOD ACCENTS Aside from being functional, the teak tray in the shower area also also enhances the look of the bathroom.
ROOM WITH A VIEW The balcony provides a perfect view of the surrounding skyscrapers.
