Renovating a home is no easy feat. Aside from finalizing tons of plans, filing permits, and allocating enough budget, you need to find a design professional who can understand and execute your vision for the space. This house in Cavite underwent a couple of renovations before, but these were unsuccessful. Fortunately, the owner stumbled upon design consultant Grace Moslares on realliving.com.ph. “I am happy that she gave me the freedom to design her home. Given the budget, I had to consider the existing pieces in the home and the additional works she requested. It involved the extension and enclosure of the terrace to create an additional bedroom as well designing and working on the fence, gate, and façade of the property,” Grace explains.

The list may seem daunting, but Grace was able to deliver a revitalized space, complete with well-thought-out details that her team added. Arnel Lozano of Magara Designs supervised the project and made sure Grace’s design was implemented. Meanwhile, the three major works of art on display were done by Magara’s head of creatives, Jayson Bongat. After the renovation, the owner is pleased with the outcome. The home is cozy and comfortable, with clutter-free areas that are perfect for rest and relaxation.

Living Area

Prior to the makeover, Grace noted that the home doesn’t have a specific style. “She had mixed pieces, some she purchased while others came from her home in the province,” says the design consultant. To improve the space, Grace wanted to create spaces with continuity by making sure the pieces and finishes pair well.

To complement the Spanish-inspired architecture of the house, the designer opted for a modern Pinoy theme, making sure that each area is comfortable. One of the first steps they took was to carve out a living area. Situated by the door, it features a custom-fit sofa and an accent chair to create ample sitting space.

Living Area

This part of the home has a nostalgic feel to it. Grace decided to paint the walls sepia, a neutral option that matches the wood tone of all Narra pieces. There’s also an antique chest that functions as a center table/storage piece.

To separate the living area from the TV room, the design team added wooden slats as partition. This element ensures the continuous ventilation and airflow on the ground floor, while matching the wooden artwork on display.

Dining Area

Across the living area is the beautiful dining area with a Narra dining set as the focal point. “We refinished the dining set as it was in a normal mahogany provincial finish. We brought back its natural Narra finish,” says Grace. Cushions were added on each chair and to make it unique, two upholstered ottomans were added as dining chairs. These seating pieces can be easily moved to the living area when needed. Completing the look is the enchanting capiz droplight.

Near the dining area, the staircase also demands attention. The design team custom-built the wrought iron handrail and baluster of the stairs, refinished the steps, and the wall where the owner’s uncut money collection can be seen. Grace polished the look with a big capiz lantern.

Kitchen

From the modern Pinoy feel of the living and dining areas, an industrial-inspired theme can be seen in the kitchen. Grace used light gray as the dominant color then spruced up the cabinets with black handles. Marble was the chosen material for the countertop while a stainless steel sink and faucet also installed. From this angle, one can spot the solid wood jalousie windows—these help ensure proper ventilation in the area.

RL Tip: Opting for frosted glass cabinet doors allows you to keep the kitchen chic while concealing the contents of your cabinets. Make sure you keep these storage spots clean and organized.

Kitchen

Grace and her team custom-built a kitchen island that doubles as a breakfast nook. It features a pinewood base and a marble countertop. For a complete industrial vibe, black industrial lights were also installed and two galvanized bar stools were added to the space.

Decor Detail

Sprucing up the wall by the staircase is the owner’s framed collection of uncut money. These pieces personalize and add character to the home. To keep the wall from being plain and boring, frames in different colors and sizes were used.

Master Bedroom

A striking shade of aqua livens up the wall in the biggest bedroom in the house. Furnished simply, the room was only reorganized to accommodate the owner’s belongings and to make sure she can move around freely. The upholstered headboard adds height to the space, while the reading nook makes for a charming corner.

Master Bedroom

In any room, an ottoman can function as a table or as storage piece. You can use it to store books, extra pillows, and sheets.

Second Bedroom

Similar to what’s been accomplished in the master bedroom, the second bedroom’s walls were given fresh coats of paint. Grace made sure that it has an efficient layout too since the owner’s relatives often visit and this room can be used during sleepovers.

Third Bedroom

The newly added bedroom seem compact, but it’s cozy and inviting—thanks to the light blue walls and comfy bed. It’s easy to note how the wood and metal shelf doubles as a headboard. It can be used to hold scented candles, framed photographs, books, and other décor pieces. “The additional room was created by enclosing the existing terrace. All furniture pieces were custom-built for the space. We also added big windows to ensure proper ventilation. We also provided the linen and accessories used in the home,” shares Grace.
