A Timeless 45sqm Unit With An Open Layout
Classic details blend with modern touches in this chic and simple home
While some shy away from the challenge of small spaces, there are many who welcome it with open arms. Armed with design inspiration, smart hacks, and an eye for style, these designers and homeowners make it a point to transform tiny spaces into lovely and welcoming homes.
In this 45sqm unit designed by interior designer Iris Ocampo, the different areas occupy one open space that's cleverly segmented without the use of huge dividers and pieces of furniture. This allows the owner of the unit to make the most of the available floor area without disrupting traffic flow. To complete the timeless look, a shade of gray dominates the walls and furnishings—giving the space a sleek and elegant appeal.

Upon entrance to the unit, guests can instantly see and appreciate the space. Aside from having enough lights to brigthen up the home, the huge window allows plenty of natural light to stream into the unit, too.
The kitchen is spacious compared to cooking areas often seen in compact units. A pair of white adjustable stools transform the extra counter into a dining nook. These seating pieces also help separate the kitchen from the living area.
To create an illusion of space, Iris installed mirrors on the walls and paired it with a glass center table.
The gray sofa matches well with the chosen white accessories and the pristine walls in the unit. Iris also made sure to inject textures and finishes on the walls to keep it from being boring and maintain the classic meets modern theme.
The sleeping space boasts of a sophisticated and hotel-like feel. Aside from the mirrored panels on both sides, additional lighting highlights the bed from behind—an element that can be adjusted according to the owner's preferences.
From the window seat, one can appreciate the spacious unit. Having a window seat allows the owner to use it as reading nook or even as an extra spot where guests can rest and hang out.
The unit may have a limited floor area but it's not lacking in storage and style. A desk at the foot of the bed allows the owner to display photos and a few knickknacks. With a comfy accent chair, it can be easily used as a home office. To keep clutter at bay, the bedside tables and the cabinet can be used to store clothes, books, and other personal belongings.
We can't help but fall in love with the inviting window seat—complete with fluffy pillows and a view of the city.
The additional wall-mounted shelves are perfect for framed photographs and even potted plants.
To add life to the space, Iris also added a shag rug in varying colors of black and gray. Aside from adding texture, it also anchors the living area and separates it from the other areas in the unit.
Who would have thought that the bed holds a secret? Iris concealed the pull-out bed to maintain the luxe feel, but if needed, it can accommodate friends who are staying over as well.
Adding elegance to the sleeping space is the tufted winged headboard. Also in a shade of gray, it works well with the crisp white sheets and light shades chosen for the soft furnishings.
To allow the owner to keep her belongings in place, the window seat also has a secret storage compartment. It can be used to store magazines and even shoes.
