A Spic-and-Span Modern Family Home in Davao

Pristine white walls, crisp lines, and heavy glass windows are major characteristics of this family abode

Light pours through the heavy glass windows surrounding the home, bouncing easily off stark white walls as air circulates throughout the space. The furniture and design is clean, simple, and modern – neutral tones, the rare splash of color, crisp lines and hard edges. This is the place the Padilla family comes home to.

The picturesque house is the couple’s dream home. Both avid art collectors and with a taste for the clean and simple, the couple already had a firm grasp of what they wanted to do with their space—crisp white lines, minimal colors to further heighten the focus on their art collection—before tapping architect Patrick Tan and civil engineer Jong Morales. This decisiveness on how their home should look greatly contributed to the fast turnaround time of finishing their house, coupled with the fact that they also bought furniture, appliances, and other knickknacks before construction even started. The result is a spic-and-span contemporary house with bespoke furniture and colorful touches of life here and there.

Entrance Detail The house entrance is an art piece in itself, a mixed-wood main door reminiscent of a puzzle, further highlighted by the pristine white walls of the home.
Basement A truly unique basement: instead of a musky area under the house, the basement is enclosed in glass doors that open up to the garden, allowing a great view. Air can freely flow around, so even when the sun rays are harsh, friends and family can hang-out at the covered basement enjoying the cool breeze.
Garden The garden is a popular place for family get-togethers, with chairs and tables ready for use. If it gets too hot, they can easily retreat to the open doors of the basement and the house.
Living Area The neutral-toned couches, custom-made by Dennis Kabamdan, have square edges that match the crisp lines of the windows, doors, and edges of the furniture around the home. A reproduction Arco lamp adds a gentle curve to the otherwise edgy living room, with Wassily chairs rest on one side near a Lyndon Garcia artwork.
Décor Detail Wooden rocking horses in red and black add a fun, playful vibe to the stark white home.
Deck The living area opens up to a small deck, where one can enjoy the view of the outdoors and the relative privacy provided by the many trees around the area.
Dining Area The dining area boasts of a bespoke mahogany set and a chest from Liliw, Laguna. The dark colors offer a stunning contrast between the white home and the red kitchen.
Kitchen The kitchen’s cupboards and shelves are red, reminiscent of 50s style diners. The kitchen was built around the appliances and equipment, where coordination between the contractor and Blum was essential to get the exact measurements of the equipment to ensure a perfect fit. The dining set comes in the same color of red and white.
Kitchen Detail An interesting play of contrasts between the kitchen and dining areas – red, white, and black give the home an interesting and funky modern vibe.
Staircase Light streams through the windows, illuminating the pristine white walls. Matching the hardwood furniture, the floating stairs were made from kamagong, with cable wires as railings to heighten its contemporary edge.
Hallway The hallway only has the bare essentials – a clean wooden floor and dark paneled doors, with art pieces serving as accents along the walls.
Master Bedroom A study in minimalist décor, the couple’s bedroom only contains a bed, a dark side table that matches the headboard, and a Mity Mike chaise lounge.
Kids' Room A room bursting with cute and educational toys in all shapes and sizes, all mostly bought before the couple even conceived. Completing the kids' room are small-scale furniture in pastel colors, like stools and tables from Ikea. A rainbow painted wall completes the fun and cheerful atmosphere, perfect for enhancing children’s developing senses and imagination.
Kids' Room Detail A diaper changing-table is also a supplies drawer. A smaller, colorful shelf ties in with the loud colors of the kids' room.
Kids' Room Detail The kids' room also highlights a white palette, accented only by a rainbow wall and colorful toys. The drawers are both functional and educational; they function as a storage space and as a way to familiarize the children with numbers, as the knobs are shaped like the numbers one to zero.
Den Bathroom A nude sketch by Malang hangs above the den toilet. The den bathroom is opposite from the rest of the house’s design, in the sense that here, white serves as accents and the wall and floor tiles are of a dark color.
