A Modern yet Cozy 40sqm Bachelor Pad

A small space is transformed into an urban escape with period-inspired pieces, customized double purpose furniture, and well-placed details

One may expect a city-based halfway house as small, spartan, and sterile, yet this gentleman’s quarters in Makati City is far from that. Interior designer Frenjick Quesada has successfully transformed this 40sqm studio into a warm and cozy nook perfect for its homeowner, Dr. Crisostomo, an obstetrician-gynecologist and department chair for the De La Salle Medical Center in Cavite.

While Dr. Crisostomo has his home base in Cavite, his Makati condo provides him respite for the weekend. The studio’s original bare white walls have been transformed into a more visually arresting space with colored vertical stripes and wooden slats for texture, while mirrors are strategically place around the room to give an illusion of bigger space. Complementing the wood furnishings are smattering shades of green around the room, creating a timeless, elegant space that is both masculine and modern.

Multipurpose period-inspired furniture and custom-made pieces complete the transformation, while well-thought out lighting and pieces from Dr. Crisostomo’s personal collection polish this condo unit into a warm, personalized weekend getaway at the heart of the city’s business district.

One-Room Lifestyle Dr. Pete Crisostomo’s 40sqm studio is an ideal urban escape. This unit can entertain guests, provide shelter for the weary, and stand as a workstation all in one.
Small Space Tip In lieu of a living area, these 1950s inspired cream Italian chairs can be the perfect spot to welcome guests. The wall’s textured and paneled design add depth and visual interest to the small space, while the mirrored panels add an illusion of space.
Small Space Tip Glass shelves placed high on the wall create additional storage areas without taking up too much space on the floor or console table and TV stand.
Multifunctional Pieces Another customized piece, this chair was inspired by a 1930s Italian piece that was updated with the use of black leather and steel. Right beside it is a multipurpose hourglass-shaped stool/side table with a cutout middle used as a shelf. The work area behind is a double duty desk that transforms into a dining table when the tabletop shelves are removed.
Hourglass-shaped stool This cylindrical and hourglass-shaped two-toned stool/side table/shelf was powder coated into a speckled finish. The textured finish helps conceal any dirt or dust.
Bedroom This ingeniously positioned and designed bed has a built-in headboard with cabinets and shelves by the sides, providing additional storage for this tiny space.
Bedroom Detail Set against a mirrored wall, the room appears bigger than it actually is. Strategically placed pin lights and lamps change the mood of the room and give off a dramatic ambiance.
Design Detail Pillows from Our Home and SM Homeworld add warmth to the otherwise masculine room.
Design Detail Use glass shelves instead of wood to add storage and organizational space without adding bulk. It’s a sleeker yet still functional alternative.
Décor Detail These figurines, vases, frames, tricycles and bicycles from Dr. Crisostomo’s collection give visitors a glimpse into his personality and refined style.
Lighting Detail As if a quirky touch in itself, the table lamp gives the perfect lighting when reading or doing some work. It gives the classic space a modern touch, too.
Small Space Tip A closet door is mounted with a floor to ceiling mirror to give an illusion of a bigger space.
Design Detail To work hand-in-hand with the mirrors, the vertical design on the walls gives an illusion of a bigger space, too.
