In October 2005, Direk Wenn Deramas moved into this three-storey house designed by architect Alex Co. Direk Wenn explains that he allowed the architect to choose the style of the three-storey property. He only asked for a home theater, a big bathroom, and a big bedroom with a spacious terrace. Aside from fulfilling his requests, the architect created a warm, inviting space that the popular film and TV director always loves to come home to.

Facade

The warm neutral shades and stone detail of the facade exude a warm and welcoming feel.

Living Room

The first thing that grabs the eye in the living room is the large framed painting of a mermaid with a child. It’s the work of actor Cris Villanueva, the 1980s teen idol who has developed into a fine character actor.

Direk Wenn reveals that he commissioned Cris to do the painting when they were taping the 2011 remake of Mula sa Puso, a teleserye that Direk Wenn first directed in 1997. The actor-painter delivered the finished product when they were making the teleserye Kahit Puso’y Masugatan, which aired in 2012.

Cris Villanueva signs his artworks with his real first name, Krishnamurti—which, incidentally, means “in the image of the Hindu deity Krishna.”

Living Room

The focal point of the living room is an L-shaped sectional sofa topped with a mix of different pillows.

Staircase

A few steps separate the lavish living area from the other parts of the home.

Hallway

A wall-mounted decorative mirror hangs above a glass-topped console table.

Dining Area

The dining room, with the elaborate table setting and floral arrangement, doesn’t always look this formal, Direk Wenn says. But it is kept clean at all times because the homeowner is a stickler for tidiness.

Dining Area

Made of kamagong wood, the table is from Budjiwara, an international furniture brand owned by Filipino interior designer Antonio “Budji” Layug. The chairs and the bench were custom-made by another company. The bench is where Direk Wenn’s late mother used to take naps on.)

Staircase

Direk Wenn’s other great fascination is superheroes—Superman, Wonder Woman, Captain America, the Incredible Hulk, the X-Men, to name just a few.

Staircase

He has a collection of close to 600 action figures housed in glass cabinets and lining the stairway from the second floor to the attic, where the bulk of his collection is kept.

Staircase

Direk Wenn's action figures fill every nook and cranny of the house.

Lanai

In the lanai, the refreshing atmosphere can also be felt in the living room when the French doors are open.

Lanai

The lanai is furnished with another dining set -- this time a six-seater table with fully-upholstered chairs with orange slipcovers.

Lanai

The blooms used as floral centerpieces, such as the orchids on the lanai’s dining table, are sourced from the homeowner’s suki in the Dangwa flower-shop district in Manila.

Lanai

Foliage and an artificial waterfall keep the lanai cool and breezy.

Love birds

Direk Wenn likes to keep lovebirds as pets to liven up his three-storey property.

Home Theater

Two long couches face the widescreen LED TV in the home theater. Direk Wenn originally thought of getting theater seats for this area, but his architect talked him out it. “Sabi niya, ‘Pa’no kung inaantok ka? Gano’n lang ’yan.’” The director inclines his head to demonstrate how he would have to lean on the backrest of a theater seat. The couch, his architect pointed out, would have other uses: “Eto, puwede kang humiga.”)

Home Theater

The video collection naturally includes items from his own filmography, numbering around 50 movies and TV shows. Framed posters of some of his works are also displayed in this room.

Home Theater

The home theater is not only a place for Direk Wenn to watch movies and display a few of his prized action figures; it is also the repository of his large collection of CDs and DVDs, both Pinoy and foreign titles, all original.

Master Bedroom

The master bedroom is Direk Wenn’s favorite spot in the house. Here, he can sleep soundly in his comfy bed, a gift from Vic del Rosario of Viva Entertainment. The bed is a Tempur, a pricey brand.

Master Bedroom

“Five to six hours talaga ang tulog ko, kasi dati, no’ng bago-bago pa ako, alipin pa nilang lahat,” he says, as he looks back on the days when he was simultaneously making two soaps and a movie. That time, he practically lived in his van and made do with a few winks. “Ngayon, hindi na. Pag late ang pack-up ko, late na rin ako pupunta sa susunod na araw.”

Master Bedroom

Hanging above the TV screen in the master bedroom is a painting of a band of angels. Direk Wenn believes that angels watch over him and guard him. He also considers his daughter Raffy, who sits comfortably in the massage chair, and his son Gab (not in photo) as his angels. That’s why he named them after the archangels Raphael and Gabriel.
