Despite intending to rent out this unit from the time it was purchased, homeowner Trixie decided to go all out in designing it. She made the wise decision of tapping a professional to work on it, rather than spending most of her weekends shopping for furnishings herself.

Trixie learned of design consultant Grace Moslares of Magara Designs through a common friend. One of the first things Grace and Trixie discussed was the budget. At first, Grace thought it wouldn’t be enough, but after finding out that Trixie had already bought most of the furniture, Grace went to work immediately. “All we needed was to set up [the furniture] properly. Pero bare pa rin siya, [so we added accessories]. I had a nice feeling na kaya naman,” Grace relates.

The 30sqm unit is one of several units that Trixie purchased as investment, each with a different theme. This studio unit takes on a modern, contemporary look—most ideal as a bachelor’s pad. According to Grace, it is a “safe” theme, which makes use of the color tones of the existing pieces.

Check out how Grace put all the elements together:

Sleeping Area

Black and gray hues are typical of bachelor pads and to soften the look of this studio unit, white linen and pine accents were used. When Grace entered the picture, Trixie had already bought the dining set and chandelier with pine details, so these were the starting points for Grace’s design.

Open Layout

Trixie was concerned about how the black sofa would look with the gray bed. Too dark? Too masculine? “Bahala na si Grace,” Trixie thought. The result is a put-together look that plays up details like the patterns on the rugs and the lines of the furniture.

Living, Dining, and Kitchen Areas

The open layout maximizes the space of the studio unit, which has dedicated areas for receiving guests, dining, cooking, and of course, sleeping.

Dining Nook

While there was an intention to give this unit a “hotel” feel, Grace put in accents that made it homey, such as small plants. The dining nook for two is cozy and intimate, reminiscent of coffee shops.

Living Area

Grace decided to place the divider with the skyline print in this unit, making it more masculine.

The glass-top coffee table keeps the space from feeling cramped, while allowing you to appreciate the black and white pattern on the rug.
