Architect Dhave Villanueva rents a 60sqm condo unit in Makati with three friends. Since they love to entertain, he convinced his housemates to renovate. It took them all of three weeks, transforming it from a drab space with mismatched furniture left behind by previous tenants. The result is what Dhave dubs as “masculine bohemian.” Working with a dark palette, the pad is indeed, undoubtedly a living space for guys. Quirky details like an orange Buddha head wearing a headphone, a porcelain blue-and-white jar, and an African mask are great conversation pieces.

In the foyer, a slim shoe cabinet doubles as a console table. The foyer leads to the living area is composed of a side table and two black Louis Ghost chairs. A full-length mirror gives the illusion of a bigger space. Two gray ottoman stools serve multiple functions: as additional seating, as a coffee table, and as additional storage.

Bold color combinations and contrasts give the place an oomph! Colorful printed pillows jazz up the plain black couch, while paintings from friends combined with decorative frames from liven up the dark walls. The black leather-backed dining chairs surround the mirror-topped dining table. The chandelier that hovers above reflects the light streaming in from the window. All the elements in this bachelor’s pad come together to enliven a dark palette for four fun-loving friends.

Living Area

The living area comes alive with colors and designs from the paintings, various frames, and patterned pillowcases against a dark wall and sofa.

Living Area

Against a dark wall, the shelf in the living area holds a caucophony of colors and shapes: books, plants, photographs, and bold accessories.

A great accent piece is an orange Buddha head wearing a pair of headphones that is sitting on the shelf. It is also functional, holding books and plants.

Dining Area

A metal-and-glass table stands in the middle of the dining area, surrounded by complementary leather-backed chairs. The chandelier hangs above the set reflects the sunlight streaming in by day, and the electric lights by night.

Dining Area Detail

A fancy mirror reflects the chandelier that hangs over the dining table. Items on the shelf are a variety of textures and colors: a jade horse, a lamp, and picture frames.

Bedroom

The patterns and colors on the bed, though wildly different, actually look very interesting and well-put together.

Bedroom Detail

The dark surface offers a great palette for the orange piping, chair, and pillowcase. The bullcaps are ingeniously stored in the small space.

Decor Detail

A black African mask sits on top of a natural wood table. The colors are muted, but the details make the space very interesting.

The bedside table is home to a beautiful glass lamp, a white metal accent, and a quirky black stone sculpture.
