A 22sqm Studio Unit with Traditional and Contemporary Touches
Bold details and a classic palette complete this home’s timeless aesthetic
When it comes to decorating and furnishing compact units, many homeowners shy away from using big pieces and striking details—worried that these can make the already limited space look cramped and uninviting. Truth be told, the right combination and balance of these elements can make a condo stand out and create a statement.
For this 22sqm studio unit, the owner and the TKSL Interior Design team wanted to achieve a home that will last for decades. To make this possible, pieces were customized to fit the space and eye-catching must-haves were added to give it an old world feel. The design team also chose details in black and a couple of moody colors—proving that these hues can work in small spaces, too! The result is a cozy home that’s perfect for the owner who loves to travel and explore the world.

From the entryway, visitors can see the entire unit. A chandelier with fabric shade gives the space an elegant feel while one can instantly feel at home the moment they set eyes on the bed. To define this part of the home, a shag rug from H&M Home was also added.
When the chandelier is not in use, the window lets in an ample amount of natural light to illuminate the space. Given the limited floor area, the design team transformed the other side of the space into a storage and entertainment center.
A small space shouldn't stop you from adding big, catchy pieces that leave an impression. The owner considers this mirror from Pampanga as the investment piece in her home. Aside from serving as an accent piece, it also has ornate details on the glass that one can admire.
Instead of keeping the walls plain, the designers chose to add outlines on the walls defined by black paint. This adds depth to the unit and keep it from being boring and dull. The same detail can be found on the cabinets. To make the bed extra snug, different pillows and a throw were added. A monogram pillow bearing the owner's initials throw in a personal touch, too.
The padded headboard showcases a solihiya print to mirror the detail of the dining chair by the side of the bed. When decorating your own space, you may want to work with similar patterns and prints to create a cohesive look.
Since the space is a bit tight, extra seating pieces to accommodate guests are always welcome. This nook by the window can serve as a reading nook when the owner wants to read a few pages before going to bed or as a special place where a visitor can relax. To make it inviting, the designers chose a tufted chair paired and a couple of pillows.
The kitchen exudes an undeniable charm that invites you to cook and prep meals. It features a tile countertop with an extra island that also serves as the dining area. The customized chair is from Betis Crafts and features a solihiya pattern.
Aside from the clock and a set of wall accents, this corner in the kitchen highlights pieces that would remind you of the beach—from pieces of rocks to shells and other curios.
To maximize the walls, a spot for travel photos and souvenirs can be seen in the kitchen. A small blackboard for notes and grocery lists was also incorporated.
An open shelf was added above the dining nook to hold photos, knickknacks, and a collection of books. From this angle, one can best appreciate the Spanish tiles used as a backsplash. According to the designers, these tiles give the area character and work well with the brass details found in the area. To make the cooking corner efficient, pin lights were also chosen—allowing the owner to work with ease.
Would you believe that this wall serves as closet, pantry, and shoe cabinet in one? This entire wall was cleverly transformed into a multipurpose storage solution that allows the owner to keep her home clean and organized.
Since the owner loves collecting shoes, a cabinet was dedicated to keeping her favorite pairs in tip-top shape. It also features a motion-activated light from IKEA so that she can organize and find what she needs minus the hassle.
