As a family accustomed to living in a condo, the owners of this home only had their eyes set on a newer unit after spending years in one of the early condo developments in Ortigas. They initially purchased a combined unit, but found the layout inconvenient. Luckily, they saw this penthouse in the same building, and things started falling into place.

The couple tapped MCD Architects for the floor plan and decorator Gwyn Guanzon for the furniture and decorations. Gwyn happened to have worked with them in their former house for a minor renovation. This time around, Gwyn’s design challenge was to incorporate all the heirloom pieces the family owns, anchoring on a fresh and new vibe.

The result is a mix of antique Chinese ornaments set against muted colors, contemporary furnishings, and pieces that the decorator designed himself, produced by Asian Tropical Living Inc. Knowing that the family is big on entertaining guests, he focused on making the dining area spacious, comfortable, and with a lot of seating options.

It’s no wonder then that the homeowners couldn’t pinpoint their favorite spot in the house—they like everything about their dwelling. “For me, the best part of the house is the general effect,” Gwyn shares. “Makikita mo ’yong pinaggagalingan ng design pero hindi siya mabigat. Ang quiet ng dating ng bahay—the combination of white, beige, and gray. Na-achieve nang maayos.”

Some of the homeowners’ collections are displayed in the unit, such as these colorful eggs.

Living Area

The space is filled with items that have been with the family for years, such as this oriental floor lamp and the framed art pieces in the living area.

Dining Area

The dining area is as spacious as it gets to make the area more conducive to entertaining guests. Visitors of the home will find the stunning view of the golf course nearby a sight to behold.

Dining Area

The gourd lanterns give off an oriental element in the dining area.

Kitchen

Origami-inspired lamps from Habitat lend an oriental appeal to the dining-slash-bar area.

Design Detail

These custom-made cabinet pulls are patterned after traditional Chinese cabinet locks.

Bar

The onyx bar delineates the kitchen from the main door and the rest of the spaces. Gwyn specifically went for the said natural stone “para pagpasok mo pa lang, kung gusto mo may dating, ’yon ang una mong makikita.

Master Bedroom

The master bedroom exudes warmth with its walls and furniture pieces in wood. Like the rest of the space, it features a combination of modern and oriental pieces.

Walk-in Closet

To make the most of the space, cabinets by the wall were installed for additional storage options. The semi-transparent glass makes the area look less cluttered.

Powder Room

The powder room goes for a more luxurious feel with beveled mirror frames. Adding an oriental touch to the setting is a pendant lantern.
