"I love the color blue,” says Dra. Weng, owner of a condo unit in Arca South, Taguig. Hoping to have it refurbished, she tapped Upcycle Manila for help. “I got married to my husband who is based in Quezon province, and now we're based [there]. All my relatives are based in Manila, so I visit often, and this will serve as my halfway home.”

Aside from adding touches of blue to the space, Dra. Weng wanted it to have a classy, hotel-like vibe while still remaining down-to-earth and cozy. This is what Upcycle Manila's Jerily Sunga worked with, going with a modern coastal country theme.

“I adore the classic rural color scheme of blue and white,” Jerily tells Real Living. “My favorite highlights here are the blue flowers and wall art... The blue accent color on the sofa adds a calm, classic touch to the decor.”

With a 40sqm floor area, the challenge was to comply with the client's goal of being able to fit 10 people in the unit (a request made prior to the pandemic), as well as to incorporate as much storage space as possible.

“All furniture [pieces have been] custom-built by Upcycle Manila...to maximize space and to achieve the client's request,” says Jerily.

An interesting piece is the extending dining table, which can seat four when folded, and eight when pulled out.

Jerily adds that another piece of note is the “custom-built breakfast nook/pantry that serves as an extended dining area with an extendable platform to give additional space when entertaining.”

Everything about the home has been maximized. The kitchen cabinets have been modified with a utility storage for the homeowner's cleaning tools.

Ottomans are used both as storage and seating, and the customized living room sofa trundle bed can accommodate guests who plan to sleep over.

The bedroom has a bed with a pull-out feature, enabling a maximum of four people to sleep on it. On one side is a nook bench, which also doubles as extra storage space.

With the proper customized furniture and installations, the unit managed to achieve a clean, modern American/coastal design with the blues becoming welcome accents to the neutral interiors.
