When we think of the industrial style, we instantly imagine spaces completed with raw and concrete elements. While these are go-tos, there are different ways to take the well-loved aesthetic to the next level, just like how interior designer Kenj So transformed this loft-type condo unit.

"I worked with my signature industrial style but I made it more modern by making it high contrast. The interior finishing still retains the industrial treatment of concrete walls and faux bricks, but here, we painted the bricks white. The unit’s interior architecture details were either kept raw or painted in matte black," the designer explains.

To further personalize the space, the owners also treat it as a personal gallery where photographs taken by their father are put on display. Each framed piece tells a story while sprucing up the bare walls.

Kitchen

One of the first things you’ll notice in the unit is the unique look of the concrete walls. Instead of leaving it bare, Kenj added texture to keep it from being boring.

The cooking area was refinished in black and completed with white subway tiles as the backsplash. Two framed photographs liven up the walls to match the black and white theme. Since the countertop is compact, the designer incorporated an extra counter that can also function as a breakfast bar, then paired it with black and white stools.

High Ceiling

To highlight the unit’s high ceiling, Kenj installed sleek decorative lights that go well with the modern theme of the space.

Big windows let in plenty of natural light and further accentuate the unit’s high ceiling. Kenj added a step-up that leads to the living area to separate it from the dining and kitchen areas, and then had wood laminated floors installed.

Since building guidelines prohibited the use of real bricks, the designer had to be creative in incorporating brick-like details. "A good solution was to use faux finish in gesso," he shares. The living area is furnished with a sofa bed, enabling the owners to create an extra sleeping space when needed; a seating piece; and a trio of center tables.

Given the set budget, Kenj had to shop for readily available pieces in malls. The designer shopped at Our Home and Home Depot for the items used in the unit. The TV console with a herringbone pattern matches the flooring, creating a cohesive look.

Staircase

In any condo unit, storage is key. The designer made sure there were enough storage options in this home by turning the space under the stairs into shelves and drawers. Shoes and other essentials can be kept here.

Bedroom

The bedroom has the same wall treatment seen in the common areas. To make it cozy and inviting, Kenj anchored the bed with a carpet that mirrors the texture on the walls.

Given the space, the designer chose not to have side tables but incorporated floating shelves on both sides of the bed instead. Kenj was also able to create a work area by bringing in a work desk with slim legs and a comfy chair.

To keep within the theme, the cabinets are painted in matte black, similar to how the kitchen cabinets were finished.
