In the age of the Internet, today’s kids are growing up in a world that seems entirely different from their parents’ era. Perhaps it is in response to this that couple Jun and Ann chose to decorate their home in a style they call “vintage Pinoy,” a throwback to the days when things were simpler, arguably more fun, and free of daily Facebook rants. “Gusto namin ‘yung house nung ‘80s, ‘yung bahay namin dati nung bata kami,” discloses Ann.

She and her husband scoured thrift shops and online stores to find pieces that would transform their five-bedroom condo unit into a home that reminded them of the good old days: They scoured Binondo to find the perfect laminates for the kitchen bar. At Bangkal, they bought a narra sofa and matching chairs, later reupholstering the cushions in inexpensive fabric. Vintage stores yielded old Magnolia Chocolait bottles and a Lily’s Peanut Butter jar, which found their way onto shelves as decor.

Even with all these amusing retro finds, the unit still looks like it belongs in the present. Their chosen 80s accents are mixed with contemporary pieces that have a hip but pretty feel—an MDC chandelier and pretty printed rug from US store Urban Outfitters, a floral-print ottoman from Pablo Gallery, white and orange beddings from IKEA. Color, texture, and patterns are all welcome here.
