This 60sqm, three-bedroom unit in Quezon City owned by a family of four symbolizes a fresh start and a special place where they can balance rest and play.

“Inspired by the warmth of the sun, it features a Japanese-Scandinavian look that matches the client’s request for a maaliwalas look,” shares interior designer Hanna Chua of Habitat Curator Interior Design. In designing the space, Hanna had to take this requirement into consideration while also making sure the space is kid-friendly.

“We provided the solution by encouraging simple living…[there are] enough storage space for the family to grow into and the motion to remove unnecessary items that come into play when it comes to their everyday decisions,” the designer explains.

Most of the items came from IKEA, with Hanna opting for easy-to-maintain materials and pieces that don’t contain sharp edges.

To make this area functional, Hanna placed a shoe cabinet that doubles as a console table. A mirror also comes in handy for last-minute checks before stepping out. The fluted panels create contrast to balance the textures.

To spruce up the kitchen, a patterned backsplash was chosen which works well with the cabinets and overall aesthetic.

The dining set from IKEA is captivating on its own. “We considered flexibility and kid-friendly furniture — there are no sharp edges, plus, there are chairs that can support toddler chairs. We also went for a bench that they can easily tuck under the table when not in use,” explains Hanna.

The designer furnished the living area with comfort and function in mind. It has a two-seater sofa and a media console cabinet.

“Considering that the sofa would be heavily used by the users, we went for a leatherette material to make sure it will be easy to clean,” says Hanna.

The work area is situated next to the window to make the most of the available natural light. Hanna used a laptop stand that also works as a coffee table in the living area.

Hanna opted for a floating bed to complement the built-in headboard with white fluted panels.

“The headboard also serves as an additional storage space, paired with white furniture to keep the space looking bright and clean as possible,” she adds.

Kids’ Bedroom

“Some of the challenges we faced here would be the limited space due to the large columns taking up a lot of space in the rooms,” shares the designer. To avoid having an awkward space, she converted it into a wardrobe that fits perfectly.

Hanna also created a lilac accent wall, the client’s favorite color, to liven up the space.

Bathroom

The bathroom is kept functional, with glass cabinets for storage and extra storage nooks under the sink.
