A 25sqm Unit for Five

Yes, five people can fit in a tiny space!

What do you do when you want to fit five occupants in a 25sqm studio unit? Interior designer Leatrice Lu came up with a clever solution—she furnished the unit with custom-made, adjustable pieces that you just pull out from the walls. At first, upon entering the unit, all you will see is a small dining area and a bunk bed on the right. However, take a few steps further, and you will see that the bunk bed has another pullout bed beneath, while the left side of the unit holds an extra bunk bed.

Leatrice says that the homeowner bought this condo unit in Makati City to serve as halfway home "for her four kids as a place to crash [in] after school hours to evade the rush hour traffic before going home." The unit is done mostly in white with a few pops of color—a refreshing combination that makes the look of the unit easy on the eyes. The homeowner says they wanted to lease out the unit on Airbnb, but in the meantime, she'd be letting her family enjoy and make the most of the smartly designed space.

Living Spaces

This side of the condo unit provides sleeping spaces for three people. When not in use, the pullout bed can be easily pushed back to have additional floor space. Printed pillowcases add a subtle playful touch.

When pulled down from the wall, the bunk bed on the left provides additional sleeping spaces for two. This proves useful whenever the homeowners' kids have friends over for group works. Even with the additional bunk bed, the unit doesn't look and feel cramped, thanks to the white-and-blue color scheme that Leatrice picked.

Dining Area

A printed table runner from Harper and Harlow (@harperandharlowph on Instagram) adds color to the dining area. "Aqua blue and chartreuse are used as accent colors. These two colors somehow evoke a playful, lighthearted feel to the space befitting high school kids and travelers," says Leatrice.

"White is an ideal backdrop for the space to make it seem expansive and airy," says Leatrice. Hence, the kitchen is also done in white for a clean and streamlined look. Kitchen appliances are kept to a minimum to avoid clutter.

This table runner from Harper and Harlow is reversible—the other side is plain which you can use if you want something subtle for your space. Mason jars make for charming drinking glasses, while flowers add a bit more color to the area.

Decor Detail

"The accent wall is very subtle so the occupants will not feel that the walls are closing in around them," explains Leatrice. These wall accents in distressed finish also add texture and warmth to the all-white space.

Decor Detail

When the bunk bed on the left side is not in use, a reminder wall is revealed. The occupants of the unit can write notes, reminders, or inspirational words on the small chalkboard.

Small Space Idea

Tote bags, keys, and other ephemera can be hung on the owl hooks by the entryway. These quirky hooks serve as decor, too.

Storage Detail

A niche behind one of the beds serve as storage for books and other knickknacks. It also has a secret drawer where more belongings can be kept.
