Mirrors can work wonders in making a space (especially compact ones) look bigger and brighter. In Feng Shui, this decorative item is also used to attract positive energy into a home. However, as Julie Khuu, an interior designer who actively practices the ancient Chinese art, notes, "As much as mirrors can provide a really great source of positive Feng Shui energy, when improperly used, mirrors can have negative consequences that affect your health, your sleep, your body image, and your mindset." Generally, mirrors must reflect light or a beautiful view to create good Feng Shui energy.

- Don't place a mirror opposite your bed. According to Julie, the active energy that is bouncing back at you could affect your sleep.

- Don't place a mirror in your bathroom that reflects the toilet bowl.
