If you've recently decided to take up gardening as a hobby, where and how do you start? Joanne Bohol of Black Thumb MNL shares these must-dos:

Don't be afraid to ask questions

Since you’re a first-time gardener, dont be to shy to ask questions. Joanne suggests visiting plant shops or garden shop to ask about materials that beginners should have. “Don’t be afraid to ask the store attendants about the recommended use of potting soil or plants. They are always eager to help,” Joanne shares.

RL Tip: “My favorite potting soil is the buhaghag mix because it’s great for beginners,” she suggests.

Start with something small

Gardening involves giving your plants tender loving care. Start with a small patch of land or a few potted plants first. “A good way to start your hobby is to start with plants that are easy to maintain like kitchen herbs,” says Joanne.

RL Tip: Peppermint, basil or lemon mint are just a couple of herbs that you can work with.

Opt for pretty containers

You can basically use anything that makes you happy! Don’t be limited to pots or plastic containers. According to Joanne, you can actually visit your home’s bodega and use some of your old ceramics or teacups for plants. You can also repurpose everyday items like tin cans or plastic bottles into plant holders.

Don’t be afraid to experiment

“Even the most seasoned plant lovers admit that there are some plants that die on them. That’s why the only way to keep your garden growing is to experiment,” says Joanne. See which containers work best, research on plants, and be on the lookout for the best soil.
