Maggie Wilson Shares Tips for Designing a Modern Yet Sophisticated Home
The Acasa Manila founder reveals how she combines functionality and aesthetics.

When she isn't making our jaws drop with travel photos, Maggie Wilson-Consunji grants us glimpses of her impeccably designed house in the background of her Instagram snaps. And while many would chalk that up up to good taste, the TV host and Amazing Race Asia champion just simply knows her stuff. Maggie studied interior design in the SoFA Design Institute and has her own design store, Acasa Manila (formerly Casa Consunji).

Maggie has launched her YouTube channel, Acasa Living, along with the store's opening. In her first video, she shared how she achieved a sophisticated yet functional home that maximizes sustainability. Here are some of her best tips:
1. Don't be scared to mix colors and metals.
Maggie reveals that she used to be afraid of mixing colors while she was in design school. However, while designing her home, she learned how to work around it. "What I did was I incorporated the color theory in the different spaces around the house," she says. Using one painting as an example, Maggie shares that she worked with the artist to determine the right colors to use so it'll fit right in. When it comes to mixing metals like copper, brass, steel, and wood, Maggie also encourages it, saying that it will add a different kind of element to a space.
2. Maximize decor tricks to hit your goals with your space.
"We wanted our home to feel light and airy, so we kept most of the walls white and installed giant lamps," she says in the vlog.
Keeping her home child-friendly is also one of Maggie's goals, so she made sure that there were no gaps or floating spaces that kids can fall into. And to prevent the young ones from moving furniture around, she specifically opted for heavy pieces.

3. Incorporate unique pieces that feel personal to you.
Maggie displays a variety of family heirlooms and unique pieces she and her husband collected from travels to make the space that much more unique and personal. "I wanted every piece in my home to tell a story," she says.
4. Repurpose unused spaces.
The Acasa co-founder says that we don't need as much space for our bed as we think, and if we want to, the empty spaces could easily be transformed into something more functional. "In our master bedroom, the space was so big and we didn't really use it, so we decided instead to make the closet space a lot bigger," shares Maggie.
