1. Layer a colorful, woven rug over a flat plain rug.

If you have a large plain rug or a seagrass rug, layer a flat woven rug with a vibrant color and pattern for added interest.

2. Combine different patterns, but stick to one color scheme.

Try various rug types—kilims, tufted wovens, and Persian-style rugs—but with one, cohesive color palette to prevent wild clashing of patterns and colors.

3. Use rugs of different shapes.

A round, solid-colored rug can create an amazing focal point if placed on top of a large, rectangular patterned rug, for example.

4. Layer rugs slightly over each other to expand a space.

Nothing is more luxurious than an entire room covered in rugs. Short of installing wall-to-wall carpeting, go for more relaxed decor by overlapping the rugs lightly over each other until the entire room is covered.
