Contrary to popular belief, curtains aren’t the only way to dress up your windows. Just like everything in your interior design, you can always find a unique alternative for something traditional with a little creativity! If you don’t like the idea of using heavy drapes to achieve privacy or cover up a less-than-attractive outdoor space, here are some ideas you can try:

1. Try monogrammed fabric panels.

Give your dining room a more formal look by using fabric panels (you can use the standard, store-bought 60” width or a narrow width for a customized look) monogrammed with your initials to make it more personal. Hang the panels from a curtain rod and make sure they drape all the way to the floor.

2. Replace blinds with recycled prepaid cards.

Ditch the office-issue blinds and replace them with a fab DIY idea: collect pre-paid cards, punch holes at the center of each edge, and link the cards together using paper clips. You can leave them as is for a quirky look or you can spray paint it for added sparkle.

3. Play with color.

A reading corner doesn’t have to look so serious—give it a playful air by creating a curtain of ribbons in different colors. Tie each strip of ribbon around a curtain rod; there’s no rhyme or reason when it comes to the arrangement—just have fun with it!

4. Mix and match materials.

Put your collection of scarves to good use by channeling a bohemian vibe and mix them all together for a no-fuss, makeshift curtain. Simply drape them over a curtain rod, or for a neater look, stitch a two-inch hem on top of each fabric and thread it along the rod.

5. Go dainty.

Dig up your grandma’s old doilies and stitch them together to create a curtain. This delicate looking window treatment looks especially sweet in a nursery—use it in place of sheer white curtains under heavier drapes.

6. Try stickers.

Window adhesives may look a little kitschy on big windows, but they are a surprising addition to jalousie windows. All you have to do is cut the adhesives, which come in rolls, into strips to fit each length of glass—such a pretty focal point in a colorful home.
