While some are busy following updates on the staging of the Miss Universe pageant in our country, we’ve been doing a bit of Instagram stalking to discover a few interesting tidbits about our very own Miss Philippines, Maxine Medina.

A graduate of the Philippine School of Interior Design (PSID), Maxine has been juggling modeling and working on a few spaces before winning the Binibining Pilipinas crown last year. As we patiently wait for the Miss U coronation night, we thought of looking into the beauty queen’s IG feed to get a glimpse of the spaces she has worked on. Here are five snapshots we loved:

1. Mix and match light and dark elements for a moody living area

It must be the envy-worthy shelf or the cozy ambiance, but this living area is definitely inviting. The dark wood and printed carpet add to the overall feel. Adding pieces in lighter finishes keep it from being too gloomy.

If you're currently revamping your living area, you may want to use shelves as dividers. Those who are working on small spaces may also opt for wall-mounted shelves or slim storage pieces that can hold books and other accessories.

Check out Habitat for pretty shelves you can add to your space.

2. Liven up white walls with pops of color

Who wouldn't enjoy hours sitting on a comfy couch while watching movies or reading a good book? This corner has white walls, a black sectional sofa to keep it from looking too plain, pillows with hints of red, and a lovely wall accent that features London, one of the cities Maxine has visited.

Those planning to carve out a reading nook or Zen spot at home may take inspiration from this corner. If you have neutral colors on the walls, choose pieces and accessories in bright, lively colors to spruce up the space. Inject these colors through tabletop decor, pillow covers, and other knickknacks.

3. Have a place for the things you love

We all want to have a special place where we can take a breather and enjoy our passions. To make sure that the man of the house can truly call this spot his own, Maxine allotted space for his guitar, decor that showcase a love for basketball, and pieces that speak of comfort and relaxation.

RL Tip: If you're low on space and would like to update the den, you may want to invest in bean bags and floor pillows. Play around with colors and sizes for an interesting mix. Visit SM Home for options.

4. Create a statement with a bold wall

For her graduation exhibit as a PSID student, Maxine was part of a group assigned to work on a space inspired by the vibrant city of Mexico. The beauty queen met and learned from artist Alfred Galvez who is known for his captivating murals. If you want to see her PSID graduating exhibit, click here.

RL Tip: Whether you're designing a new home or renovating an old abode, don't be afraid to mix and match colors. If you love bold red shades or bright yellow hues, achieve balance by pairing it with light-colored accessories. These lively hues can be used for accent walls, too.

5. DIY tiles make for an interesting focal point

To complete the PSID project, Maxine and her teammates also created DIY cement tiles!

If you're looking for a subtle update that would still leave a lasting impression, you can work on your floors. Tiles in fun colors and interesting shapes can instantly change the look of your space and make it look brand new. For those who love experimenting and trying out quirky decor can also use a few pieces to create a wall accent. Consider getting in touch with a professional to help you accomplish such projects.
