Have you always dreamed of coming home to an elegantly designed space with plush furnishings and classic details? The question has always been—how do I begin? Paolo Lopez, a project designer at Lor Calma and Partners, gives us insights on high-end design. “The core difference between a typical design versus a high-end design is that there’s special attention to both detail and material in the latter,” the designer explains. “Colors and textures vary greatly, with the more expensive ones having more color ranges and interesting textures.”

Use top-notch materials

High-end means quality. Be it the paint you choose or the upholstery of a furniture piece, it all boils down to which best appeals to the senses. “High-end does not necessarily mean expensive, but more often than not, high-end materials carry a hefty price tag because the material is more durable than your typical choices at a depot,” the designer says.

Keep it simple

“Simplicity is key when it comes to high-end design,” says Paolo. “You want to feature the materials you choose more than the forms and other design elements that would otherwise divide a person's attention as they enter the space.” With simple lines and forms, the quality finishes and pieces are further highlighted.

Create lighting design

Lighting plays a crucial role when it comes to design as “…it can make or break the look you’re trying to achieve,” Paolo says. “High-end lighting is a unique addition to the space. It sets the mood of the room, hence if you want a high-end feel, you need to get good lights.” This can be achieved through ambient and indirect lighting that showcases the textures and finishes of a space.

Treat everything as an investment

One way of looking at high-end pieces and materials is to consider them as investment pieces. Paolo says, “As the cost of materials continuously rise, investing in certain types of wood or stone would mean an increase in value as the years go by.” The same goes for classic designer furniture and lighting fixtures since their appeal and quality transcends the fads, and this translates to better savings in the long run.
