Maintaining a home is a continuous process that involves investing in quick makeovers, exercising one’s creativity, and constantly looking for ways to turn an area into a picture-perfect corner. While you can change your soft furnishings and furniture from time to time, you may want to focus on fixes that prettify and add value to your space. If you have the time and budget to spare, these ideas from interior designers Vera Villarosa-Orila and Nikki Audine cost around P5,000 and will give you a refreshed space:
Paint your walls.
“Say bye bye to drab walls with a fresh coat of paint to update your interiors. Stay away from tacky colors and consider going for neutrals,” says Vera.
Create an accent wall.
Consider working with wallpaper when sprucing up a plain space. “Pick a spot—this can be your dining area wall, the wall behind your sofa in the living area, or the wall behind the TV,” suggests Vera. According to the designer, a print or a pattern that contrasts well with the color of your walls is the best choice. “A roll or two should do the trick as the area you need to work on doesn’t have to be that big. Change the color of your front door.
First impressions last. Create an impact with a front door that catches the attention of guests. “You can reinvent the color of your main door with a vibrant hue or a pastel option,” says Nikki.

Experiment with stick-on tiles.
To liven up a dull corner, stick-on tiles are pocket-friendly options you can work with. Consider doing this in the kitchen or in your bedroom, too. “If you have a plain kitchen backsplash, there are self-adhesive wall tiles that are resistant to heat, water, and humidity. No need to go through messy installations, plus, these are affordable, too,” shares Nikki.

Change the look of your cabinets with new knobs and handles.
Vera suggests letting go of chipped and cracked hardware. “Stay away from plastic types as these will make your kitchen look cheap,” she adds. If you decide not to repaint or refinish the cabinets, don’t forget to measure the width of the handles to avoid making new holes. The designer says that stainless steel is a common option among homeowners. Depending on the look you want to achieve, there are decorative handles available in stores and depots you can check out as well.
Update your lighting fixtures.
“Create balanced lighting in your space and make sure that all the primary work areas are well-lit. You can opt for surface mounted lights and conceal electrical wires with wire channels. Pick the white ones to match the color of your ceiling. Choose LED bulbs, those around 9watts and above (considering you have minimal lighting fixtures), to light the area,” explains Vera. Those who want to add flair can go for accent lighting. Adding proportional droplights in the living or dining area can create layers in your space.
