5 Basic Tools You Need in Your Home Repair Kit

Because it always pays to be ready.

There are repairs in your home that you'll need to have a professional do, but sometimes, small issues are best addressed on your own. That means you need to have tools on the ready. Of course, you don’t need an entire hardware store in your closet, but at the very least, have the basics just in case you need to do an emergency fix.

1. Tape measure

Lock tape measures are essential in any household, because at some point, you'll need to measure your space, may it be for a renovation or for a new piece of furniture. Make sure to find one which won’t easily break.

2. Screwdrivers

It’s important to have a screwdriver set of different tips and sizes, but if you want things compact, go for a multi bit screwdriver, which is basically a handy tool that come with different tips you can easily exchange and store.

3. Hammer

This is a basic in any kit, especially if your home features a lot of wood. Get one that has a curved claw in case you need to be dislodging and removing old nails.

4. Pliers

There is a huge variety of pliers out there, but it’s okay to stick with three: long-nose for twisting wires, tongue-and-groove to help you loosen and tighten nut or bolts, and diagonal pliers for cutting thick wires.

5. Wrench

Tongue-and-groove pliers may help, but there’s nothing like a classic combination wrench, which has an open claw on one end and a closed loop on the other. You can also go for a crescent wrench, which comes with an adjustable claw.
