Gate and Fence Designs For Tropical Homes
Complete the look of your tropical home with these gate and fence design pegs
If you think that you can have a one-style-fits-all gate for modern, tropical, and traditional homes, then you may want to hold that thought.
A front gate and fence should match the overall style of your home’s façade, to complete the overall theme. Incorporate the materials used in your tropical home (wood, weathered metal, natural stone) or elements of your theme (stylized trees, waves, etc.) into your gate design. Here are some gate ideas gleaned from Instagram:
Warm wood
Wrought iron frame and wooden planks are a classic gate design for tropical homes, as the wood adds warmth and gives a nice natural touch that are essential to tropical design. Can’t afford real wood? Go for ficem boards with a wood grain pattern—like the ones by Hardieflex—and stain them in a wood color.
Araal
Another favorite tropical fence material (and one that goes quite well with a wooden gate) is araal stone, which are gray-colored flagstones that are painstakingly cut and stacked by Ifugao builders. The Mañosas love using araal in their projects, as seen here in their Tago model home.
Laser cut
Even though laser cutting is considered a high-tech gate-decorating technique, it can still have a soft, natural touch, if you choose the right design. This circular patterned gate has a mandala-like, bohemian, but modern feel to it that would go quite well with a tropical-style home.

Linear dashes
Simple, straight lines make for gates that are perfect for a modern-tropical home. Want a gate that’s a bit more natural looking? Ditch the typical black metal paint, and go for a lighter paint color, such as light gray, light brown, or beige.
A tree grows here
Want a quirky look? If you don’t want to use natural materials, go for a stylized, natural design, such as this laser-cut tree that adds a whimsical touch, as well.
Exotic
If you have a tropical house that leans more on Asian or exotic Balinese styles, then go for a showstopper gate. An ornately carved, Balinese or Indonesian-style door can be incorporated into your gate. You can buy these types of doors from Orientique in Makati.
